Allan Slieter

ALLAN ROY SLIETER was born to George and Theresa (Evert) Slieter on September 6, 1928 in Kanaranzi, Minnesota. He attended various country grade schools and graduated from Lester High School in Lester, Iowa in May 1946. He enlisted into the Army and completed infantry basic training and then was assigned to Army Ground Force Headquarters and served at the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. and at Ft. Monroe in Virginia until he was honorably discharged in November 1947. Al attended Morningside College in 1948 and then helped on his Dad's farm until 1950 when the Army Reserves recalled him for duty. He served in San Francisco until his discharge in 1952. Following his service he attended Heald Engineering College in San Francisco, California and graduated with a Bachelor's of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1954. While in college, Al married Barbara Quantz, whom he met while in San Francisco. He worked as an engineer in the rocket and missile industry until 1965, when the family moved to a farm near Hardwick. At this time Al began his career in agriculture with crop farming, a dairy herd, a farrow to finish operation and beef cattle. While operating the farm, Al also worked as a design engineer for A.R. Wood Manufacturing Company in Luverne. Al was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Hardwick and served in multiple leadership positions. He served on the Luverne School Board from 1974 to 1980. He also was elected and served on the Rock County Board of Commissioners from 1980 to 1992, when he decided not to run for another term. He then worked as a sales representative to Aid Association for Lutherans until his retirement in 2000.

Al became a resident at the Minnesota Veterans Home in Luverne, Minnesota, in June 2013 where on Friday, April 11, 2014 he died peacefully at the age of 85 years, 7 months and 5 days.

He is lovingly remembered by his wife, Barb; three children, Jeanette (James) Rutten of Norfolk, Nebraska, John (Jean) Slieter of Lincoln, Nebraska, and Randall (Susan) Slieter of Olivia, Minnesota; daughter-in-law, Janet Slieter of Luverne; 13 grandchildren, Christina (Jarrod) Johnson, Elizabeth (John) Rutten-Turner, Anne (Adam) Backer, Andrew Rutten, Tracy (Travis) Kerner, Lucas Slieter, Jeanne (Ryan) Bonham, Joey Slieter, Josh Slieter, Jen (Tom) Kowalski, Kait Slieter, Allison Slieter and Samuel Slieter; 6 great-grandchildren, Hadley and Cason Kerner, Saylor and Jace Bonham, and Elijah and Lena Grace Backer; and other family. He was preceded in death by his sons, Robert Slieter (August 14, 1973), Dale Slieter (July 24, 2012); granddaughter, Alene; parents, George and Theresa Slieter; and four siblings, Bernard Slieter, Richard Slieter, Ray Slieter and Phyllis Lange.
