Alvina Mae Christoffels was born on December 13, 1935 to Gerrit and Willemina (Juffer) Hoff on a farm north of Steen, Minnesota. She attended District 61 country school in Rock County through the eighth grade. Alvina and her family were members of the Steen Reformed Church until 1955 when they became charter members of the American Reformed Church in Luverne, making her profession of faith on January 8, 1956. Alvina was very active in her church, belonging to women’s bible study and teaching Sunday school and VBS. While attending a church roller-skating party, Alvina asked a shy, handsome man to a couple’s skate. This lead to their happily ever after. On June 5, 1964, Alvina and Don Christoffels were united in marriage at the American Reformed Church in Luverne. The couple made their home and raised their four children on a farm near Hardwick, Minnesota until 1987, when they moved to Luverne. Alvina began her working career as a nurses aide at the Luverne Community Hospital, then became a stay-at-home mother. In 1980, Alvina began working in the Dietary Department of the Luverne Community Hospital, later becoming the Department Supervisor. She retired in 2000. She and Don enjoyed their retirement years taking bus tours and cruises with friends and enjoyed camping with family. On Saturday, November 11, 2023, Alvina died peacefully at the Good Samaritan Society – Mary Jane Brown Home in Luverne at the age of 87 years, 10 months, and 29 days.
Alvina was a member of the Pink Ladies Auxiliary, a 4-H leader, and volunteered at Justice For All in Rock Valley, Iowa. She enjoyed baking, gardening, needlework and spending time with family. She also found enjoyment in the simple things in life – like a raspberry shake at JJ’s. She will be remembered for her kindness, gentleness and willingness to help others.
Alvina is lovingly survived by her husband, Don; four children, Doran (Jean) Christoffels of Chandler, Minnesota, Darci (Dave) Hampson of Oak Creek, Wisconsin, Dean Christoffels of Houston, Texas, and Denise Traxler of Le Center, Minnesota; nine grandchildren, Anthony (Stephanie) Christoffels, Jeremy (Allison) Christoffels, Michael (Hannah) Christoffels, Matt (Sydney) Hampson, Emily Hampson, Makenna Hampson, Kailey Hampson, Marcus Traxler and Evan Traxler; seven great-grandchildren, Nicholas, David, Emma, Owen and Nathan Christoffels, and Hadley and Walker Hampson; brother-in-law, Marvin Veldkamp of Brandon, South Dakota; two sisters-in-law, Luella (Lloyd) Schaap and Carol Groetsema, both of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; and other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her son-in-law, Douglas Traxler; parents, Gerrit and Minnie Hoff; brother, Arthur Hoff; and sisters, Grace (Chris) Van Wyhe, Geraldine (John) Gorter, and Leona Veldkamp; parents-in-law, Emmett and Marie Christoffels; and brothers-in-law, Gerald (Jeanette) Christoffels and David Groetsema.
