BERDINE CAROLINE (BEYER) BROEKHUIZEN was born on October 8, 1930, to Frank and Martha (Brose) Beyer in Madison, South Dakota. She attended country school while the family lived near Ramona, South Dakota and then attended Ramona High School, graduating in 1948. Following high school she lived in Madison, South Dakota and worked at a dime store. On July 2, 1950, she was united in marriage to John Broekhuizen in Madison. Throughout the years they lived in Brookings, South Dakota, on a farm in Ramona, South Dakota, Hendricks, Minnesota, and finally moved to Pipestone in 1969. Berdine helped on the farm in her younger years and also at Feckers in Marshall, Minnesota. While living in Pipestone she worked at Bayliner, Headstart, and also at the Good Samaritan Communities of Pipestone for 35 years. In 1976, they moved into the home Berdine was presently living in. In 1977, John preceded Berdine in death. On Thursday, January 26, 2017, Berdine died at the Pipestone County Medical Center in Pipestone at the age of 86 years, three months, and 18 days.
Berdine was a member of Christ the King Free Lutheran Church in Pipestone. Berdine enjoyed gardening, dancing, and traveling with her children to visit her other children and grandchildren. Family was very important to Berdine.
Berdine is lovingly remembered by her eight children, Susan Gilbert of Hudson, Wisconsin; Diane Broekhuizen of Pipestone, Timothy (Sherrill) Broekhuizen of Flandreau, South Dakota, Karen (Terry) Claussen of Havre de Grace, Maryland, Gail Whitaker of Belle Plaine, Minnesota, Julie (Bernie Krempges) DeWitte of Pipestone, Sandra (Joe) Buysse of Jasper, Minnesota, and Rebecca (Randy) Baden of Jasper; 21 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; one brother, Don Beyer of Howard, South Dakota; one sister, Carol Hammer of Madison, South Dakota; one sister-in-law, Anna Marie (Aldon) Strom of Brookings, South Dakota; and seven nieces and nephews. Berdine was preceded in death by her husband, John; her parents; and three grandchildren.
