Beulah Hourscht

BEULAH ELAINE TOFT was born on May 23, 1923 in Hadley, Minnesota to Ben and Elsie (Johnson) Toft. She was raised on a farm near Hadley and received her education at a country school. On July 8, 1939, Beulah was united in marriage to Dale Dayton. They made their home in Slayton, Minnesota. On March 21, 1945, Dale was killed during WWII in Eastern Germany. On April 22, 1950, she was united in marriage to Edgar Hourscht. They made their home in the Ruthton area where they farmed. Beulah was employed as a cook at Ruthton school from 1974-1994. Upon her retirement, Beulah and Edgar moved to Hadley. Edgar preceded her in death in 1998. Beulah continued to live in Hadley until 2011 when she moved to the Plymouth, Minnesota area to be by her family until her death on Friday, May 22, 2015, one day before her 92nd birthday.

Beulah was a member of the St. Martin Catholic Church in Woodstock, Minnesota where she was active in the Ladie’s Aid and taught Sunday school. She was also a Girl Scout Leader for many years. Beulah enjoyed playing cards and dice games. One of her favorite traditions was the lefse and kringla baking weekends with her family. She had a knack for frying bullheads, which was referred to as the best way, by her family. Beulah’s favorite holiday of the year was the Shetek Attack family reunion, most importantly, she cherished all the time she was able to spend with her children and all of her grandchildren.

Beulah is lovingly remembered by her children: Nancy (John) Hook of Carlsbad, California, Steve (Wanda) Hourscht of Big Lake, Minnesota, Dan (Diana) Hourscht of Evansville, Indiana, DeeAnn (Kurt) Froelich of Golden Valley, Minnesota, Barbara (Nick) Nicholson of Zimmerman, Minnesota and Mary Gilbert of Golden Valley; 13 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; 3 great-great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents; husbands: Dale and Edgar; son Jim Hourscht; two brothers: Dean and Darel Toft and two sisters: Adele Shrader and Neva Kathman.
