CARLETON ARTHUR BATES was born on December 17, 1949 to William and Sharon (Stewart) Bates in Vermillion, South Dakota. During his childhood, Carl and his family moved to Sac City, Iowa and Mitchell, South Dakota before settling in Sioux City, Iowa, where he was raised and received his education. In 1968, he graduated from East High School in Sioux City. He then attended both Westmar College in LeMars, Iowa and Briar Cliff College in Sioux City before entering the US Navy. After the Navy, Carl married Patricia Olson of Sioux City and he began working with his dad at a protein blending plant in LeMars. A few years later, the family began Plains Milling, Inc. in Magnolia, Minnesota where Carl oversaw the sales portion of the business for the next twenty years. Carl then furthered his education and passion as he began working part-time doing digs with Augustana College Archaeology Lab throughout the Midwest region.
Throughout his life, education was important to Carl as he continued learning through college courses and life experiences. He loved driving and traveling all over, was an avid reader and also loved sailboating at Lake Okoboji in Iowa. Carl treasured family and will be remembered for being 100 percent committed to his passions in life.
On Wednesday, October 29, 2014 Carl passed away at his home in Magnolia.
Carl is survived by his daughter, Laura (Paul) Thornhill of Fulda, Minnesota; son, David Streeby of Portland, Oregon; three grandsons; three siblings, Warren “Bud” (Becky) Bates of LeMars, William “Bill” Bates of Magnolia, and Lauralee “Laurie” Johnson of Forest Lake, Minnesota; nieces and nephews; former spouse, Patricia Olson; and other family. He was preceded in death by his parents.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred.
