CARL AUGUST PETERSON, III, was the only son of nine children born to Carl August and Hortense (Conrad) Peterson, II. He was born on December 19, 1926 on the family farm in Pipestone County, Minnesota where he was raised and attended country school in District #53. He continued his education at the high school in Pipestone. Upon completion of his education, he helped on the family farm. On November 12, 1950, Carl was united in marriage to Marion Niemann at Trinity Lutheran Church in Jasper, Minnesota. Following their marriage, they lived on his family’s farm. Beginning in 1953, Carl worked at Peavey Elevator in Pipestone for two years. In 1957, they purchased the Peterson family farm. Carl began working at the Pipestone Livestock Auction in 1994. In 1997, Carl and Marion moved into Jasper, and Carl continued to work at the Pipestone Livestock Auction until 2002. In October, 2011, he was diagnosed as having leukemia. On Friday, April 12, 2013, Carl died peacefully surrounded by his wife and five children at his home near Jasper at the age of 86 years, three months and 24 days.
Carl was a life-long member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Jasper where he was baptized on March 25, 1927 and confirmed on May 24, 1942. He served as an elder for six years. He served on the Pipestone Soil Conservation for six years, and he also served as an Eden Township Supervisor for 23 years. He enjoyed raising and feeding cattle, traveling and playing cards. He was very proud of his five kids, 14 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Carl was always eager to share his jokes and stories.
He is lovingly remembered by his wife, Marion Peterson of Jasper, Minnesota; five children, Jeanette Janski and her husband Les of Waconia, Minnesota, Debra “Deb” Tanner and her husband David of Eagan, Minnesota, Jerrold “Jerry” Peterson and his wife Terry of Jasper, Minnesota, William “Bill” Peterson and his wife Sharon of Jasper, Minnesota, and Richard “Rick” Peterson and his wife Patti of Spearfish, South Dakota; 14 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; five sisters, Juanita Johnston and her husband Wint of Leawood, Kansas, Irene Schalow of Pipestone, Minnesota, Dorothy Weets of Pipestone, Minnesota, Myrtle Sass of Garretson, South Dakota, and Bernice Alexander of Alexandria, Virginia. He was preceded in death by his parents; and three sisters, Eloise Mitchell, Mildred Witte, and Irma Gehrels.
