Attendees are asked to wear their favorite Minnesota Twins or Vikings or racing shirt to honor Dan’s passions. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to defer funeral expenses.
Daniel Ray Meyer, a true Minnesotan sports fan, passed away at his home from natural causes on Wednesday, May 8, 2024 at the age of 61 years, nine months and seven days. He was born on August 1, 1962 to Dick and Mary (Dietrich) Meyer in Luverne, Minnesota. He grew up on the farm alongside of his six siblings. Typical days were spent doing chores, milking cows, bailing hay, while also going to school and playing sports. Sports were what Dan enjoyed best as he was a three sport athlete, earning all-conference honors in football, wrestling and baseball. He was most proud of earning the title as individual state wrestling champion at 185 pounds his senior year. Dan graduated from Luverne High School in 1981. Following school enlisted into the United States Army and served for three years.
Dan primarily worked in the concrete business as a form setter, concrete pourer and concrete finisher. In recent years, Dan worked at the St. Francis House as a senior housing assistant. St. Francis provides housing and services for people who are experiencing homelessness or in transitions in their lives. Dan’s interests were reflected in his BIG personality. He loved the Minnesota Twins, the Vikings, local and national car racing and the WWF. Most of Dan’s conversations made a reference to win/loss statistics, race car driver rankings or a little unknown fact he knew. His children, Alex and Cole were the apples of his eye and he cherished every moment with them. Dan was the loudest and proudest fan in the stands. He loved cheering at baseball, basketball and football games and wrestling matches for his boys throughout the years.
Dan struggled in life to maintain a healthy, clean lifestyle. These challenges paved a way to his greatest strength. A deep understanding of God’s word through daily devotions and study, hundreds of AA meetings and ongoing connections to co-workers and friends who knew all about the “Big Book” the “12 steps” and leaning on God for strength.
Dan is survived by his two sons, Alex (Brenda) Meyer of Sioux City, Iowa, and Cole (Lisa) Barden of Lake Crystal, Minnesota; six siblings, Cheryl (Tom) McGarthwite of Granite Falls, Minnesota, Doug (Connie) Meyer of Greeley, Kansas, Joanie (Al Stark) Meyer of St. Cloud, Minnesota, Donald (Lori) Meyer of Sioux Falls, David (Vicky) Meyer of Luverne, and Daryl (Shakira) Meyer of Lake Park, Iowa; and other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Richard “Dick” and Mary Meyer.
