Darrell A. Huiskes

September 20, 1946 — April 17, 2015

DARRELL ALVIN HUISKES was born on September 20, 1946 to Alvin and Dorothea (Kurtz) Huiskes in Luverne, Minnesota. He was baptized on October 13, 1946 at St. John Lutheran Church in Luverne and confirmed his faith there on May 15, 1960. He was raised in Luverne and attended Luverne High School, graduating with the class of 1964. Following his education, he entered the United States National Guard. Upon completion of his training, he went to work for Luverne Fire Apparatus. On August 26, 1966, Darrell was united in marriage to Anna Vermeer at the American Reformed Church in Luverne. The couple made their home in Luverne. Darrell took a job with the Luverne Police Department and then began his career with the City of Luverne in 1970. Darrell later became the Public Works Director where he was instrumental in developing the city, beautifying the community, and improving quality of life. Many of the things we see and enjoy around our town are a direct reflection of his hard work and dedication to the city of Luverne. Some examples of projects include the indoor swimming pool and fitness center, the baseball fields, maintaining the hockey rink by the river park, and creating multiple pocket parks within the city. Darrell retired in 2003. In their retirement years, the couple enjoyed their time together with their children, grandchildren and family. On Friday, April 17, 2015 Darrell went to live with his Lord at the age of 68 years, 6 months and 27 days.

Darrell was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Luverne. He was also a member of the American Legion. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and being outdoors. He loved keeping his yard and landscape beautiful. He was proud of the trees down Blue Mound Avenue when in bloom and all the other trees he planted around the city. He was a man of service and a great caregiver to Anna and his mother, Dorothy. Above all, Darrell loved his family. He especially enjoyed spending time with his five grandchildren, Austin, Loghan, Anna, Tayler and Gaven.

Darrell is remembered by his wife of 48 years, Anna; daughters, Audra Kern of Larchwood, Iowa and Tricia Huiskes of Luverne; grandchildren, Austin, Kali, Loghan, Anna, Tayler and Gaven; his mother, Dorothy Huiskes of Luverne; eight siblings, Dianna (Glen) Malmquist of Luverne, David (Shirley) Huiskes of Luverne, Darla (Keith) Schmuck of Luverne, Donna (Lon) Remme of Luverne, Marcia (Don) Bork of Beaver Creek, Minnesota, Jim (Mary) Huiskes of Northfield, Minnesota, Dawn (Dan) DeWispelaere of Luverne, and Kathy (Jeff) Wilsey of Brandon, South Dakota; and other family. He was preceded in death by his father, Alvin; and his granddaughter, Faith.
