DARRELL GEORGE HOECK was born on July 4, 1940 in Luverne, Minnesota to George and Viola (Dibbern) Hoeck. He was baptized on September 1, 1940 at Zion Lutheran Church in Hardwick, Minnesota and was confirmed at St. John Lutheran Church on July 11, 1954. He attended Beaver Creek Public School, graduating as Salutatorian in 1958. After graduation, he was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1963 and was honorably discharged in 1969. Darrell returned to the family farm in Springwater Township. He worked on the farm and as a masonry foreman for Ray Haugan Construction in Sioux Falls, South Dakota for the next 20 years. On September 14, 1968, Darrell married the love of his life, Kayleen Barstead. The couple remained living and working hard on the farm where they raised two boys, Daniel and Russell. Darrell retired as a masonry foreman, but continued working on the farm until he and his wife relocated to an apartment in Sioux Falls in 2020. On January 16, 2022, while residing at the Dougherty Hospice House in Sioux Falls, Darrell went to be with his Lord at the age of 81 years, 6 months, and 12 days.

Darrell was very active throughout his life in local politics, serving the Springwater Township Board for 38 years (the longest serving member since its inception). He began as a clerk and moved up to chairman of the board, a position he held for over 20 years. He was also active as an elections judge and the president of the Minnesota Townships Associations Board. Darrell was a man of strong opinions and didn’t mind letting you know what they were. He enjoyed spending time with his friends and having a good conversation over a cup of coffee. Darrell wanted things done a “certain” way, not the “easiest” way, and he instilled a strong work ethic in those around him. He also enjoyed feeding cattle and the relationships he built at the Sioux Falls Stockyards.

Darrell is survived by his wife Kayleen of Sioux Falls; two sons, Daniel (Tammy) Hoeck of New London, Wisconsin and Russell (Stacey) Hoeck of Sioux Falls; 5 grandchildren, Josh, Alyssa, Kaden, Anna, and Brody; one great-grandchild, Viola Rose; sister, Gloria Ryan of Las Vegas, Nevada; and two nieces, Felicity Bormann of Las Vegas, and Julia Ryan of Glen Rose, Texas. He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Viola; uncles, John, Gordon, Lorenz and Victor; and aunt, Alice (Gundvaldson).
