DARRYL KOLL was born to George and Martha (Rath) Koll on March 21, 1924 on a farm near Rock Rapids, IA where he was raised and attended country school. He continued his education at Rock Rapids High School. After his graduation in 1942, he helped his father farm. On July 7, 1943, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served during World War II in the Armed Guard where he participated in the European Theatre as a Gunners Mate 2nd Class Petty Officer. After his discharge from the service in December, 1945, he returned to Rock Rapids. Two weeks later, he began working at Meredith Publishing in Des Moines, IA. Then four months later, he moved to Sioux Falls, SD, where he became employed by A.Y. McDonald Manufacturing, a plumbing and heating wholesaler. On November 18, 1946, Darryl was united in marriage to Eulalia Clark in the chapel of St. Joseph’s Cathedral in Sioux Falls. Following their marriage, they resided in Sioux Falls. One year later, they moved to Rapid City, SD, and Darryl continued his employment in sales with A.Y. McDonald. In 1950, they moved to Alvord, IA where they owned and operated a hardware store known as Koll’s Modern Supply. While living there, he also served as the mayor of Alvord. In 1961, they sold the business and moved to Worthington, MN. At that time, Darryl returned to work at A.Y. McDonald as a salesman, achieving many awards for top sales. In 1962, they moved to Pipestone, MN where they built their own home and lived for 45 years. During this time, Darryl continued to work for A.Y. McDonald until his retirement in 1988. In February, 2010, they became residents of Ridgeview Estates in Pipestone. On Tuesday, September 13, 2011, Darryl was taken to the Pipestone County Medical Center where he died that same day at the age of 87 years, 5 months and 22 days.
Darryl was a member of St. Leo Catholic Church in Pipestone where he served faithfully as an usher. He was a lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus. He was also a member of the Michael Boock American Legion Post 6 and VFW Post 3814 in Pipestone. He was a charter member of the Golden K Kiwanis Club in Pipestone. He loved to spend his time golfing, playing cards, reading, doing word searches, and traveling. He especially enjoyed spending time with his family and his friends.
He is lovingly remembered by his wife, Eulalia Koll of Pipestone, MN; two children, Joan Back (Tim) of Eagle Lake, MN, and David Kriesel-Koll (Pam) of Richfield, MN; five grandchildren, Travis Back and his son Gabriel, Melissa Hendley (Doug) and their children Makenzie, Austin, and Myles, Adam Back (Rosi) and their son Logan, Sarah Brosz (Chris), and Amanda Kriesel-Koll and her son Colten; two sisters, Marvyl Kahl of Inwood, IA, and Aimee Schlumbohm of Rock Rapids, IA; one sister-in-law, Lorayne Koll of Rock Rapids, IA; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Howard; and one sister, Beverly Schmidt.
