DAVID O. HOILAND was born January 28, 1932 to Selmer and Martha (Ormseth) Hoiland in Luverne, Minnesota. He spent his childhood years on the family farm near Luverne where he graduated from Luverne High School in 1950. David excelled at football and continued his love of the game at Augustana College in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. He attended Augustana for two years until being drafted into the US Army during the Korean War. He married his high school sweetheart, Verna Lou Shelby, on January 4, 1952 in Luverne. During his years with the Army, he served in the 2nd Infantry Division where he was awarded the Combat Infantry Badge and two Battle Stars. He also played on the Ft. Riley Battle Stars Army football team in Kansas. Upon his honorable discharge, he returned home to his bride in Luverne. They made their home in town filling it with six children, love and laughter. They moved out to the family acreage in the 1980's. Initially, David farmed with his Dad, worked as a rural mail carrier, and was a First Sergeant for the Army National Guard. In 1964, he began his career at Mark Jacobson Implement where he worked as a salesman until his retirement in 2009. He also worked for many years as a salesman for DeKalb Seed. Verna preceded him in death on August 27, 2002. David remained on the acreage and stayed active at his job and in the community. On September 18, 2013, he moved to the Minnesota Veterans Home where he died peacefully on March 19, 2014 at the age of 82 years, 1 month and 21 days.
David was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church in Luverne where he served as a Sunday School Superintendent. He was a lifetime member of the VFW, member of the Jaycees, officer and board member of the Maplewood Cemetery Association, and a lifetime member of the Luverne Country Club. He enjoyed woodworking, vegetable gardening, mowing, and entertaining his classmates of 1950. He was proud of his family's acreage and the beauty it held. He loved decorating the farmplace for Christmas and hosting annual 4th of July and Memorial Day Celebrations. He especially enjoyed taking walks with his brother Steve and solving the world's problems. Many words of wisdom came from David and one thing he would want you to know is... 'Just remember, always have fun!'
