Dennis Hansen

Dennis Carl Hansen was born in Tyler, MN, on May 17, 1938 to Carl & Augusta (Fink) Hansen. The family, including older brother, Jim and older sister, Lois and their parents, lived on a farm near Hendricks, Minnesota. At the age of nine, Dennis and family moved to Pipestone. He soon became an active member of his school and neighborhood.

Dennis and great friend, Ron Zetterlund entertained the neighborhood with movies, a comic book library, and even a neighborhood newspaper, printed on their first small letter press in Ron’s basement.

A member of the class of ’57, Dennis was known for his capable, involved spirit. After graduation he enrolled in the Dunwoody Technical College Printing Program.

From 1960-1963, Dennis served our country in the United States Army. His main project was Polar Research and Development in Greenland. His many skills enabled him to make a contribution of great value.

After his military career, Dennis finished his Dunwoody degree. His next few years involved various career moves along with his friend Ron Z. In 1968, they entered upon the endeavor of opening Nicollet Press here in Pipestone. Their quality printing served the community, the area, and even some nation-wide ventures. Due to changes in the economy, Nicollet Press closed in 1984 and Dennis continued as a printing marketer/broker.

The years 1968-1987 held some life-changing events for Dennis. On December 27, 1969, he married Diane Smith. Their two sons were born in 1974 & 1978. Dennis had his first heart by-pass surgery in July of 1974. He second surgery was in 1987. Dennis was a valiant survivor and was open to life-changing activities.

How incredible were the years of being a dad, a husband, a true friend to so many, and on the threshold for new dreams. What a gifted, dedicated man!

Dennis became involved in so many Pipestone activities through the years; Kiwanis, the Hiawatha Pageant, the Al Opland Singers…and this all led to the grand dream of the Pipestone Performing Arts Center. Yes, the torch burned brightly, and it will continue!

Dennis, surrounded by love and his caring family, guided by God, had a peaceful exit and a loving entrance into his next stage of life on January 22, 2025. He was able to be in the home he loved until 24 hours before we know he heard the words, “Well done, dear man. Your dreams are real. You dreamed of big things and appreciated the small things. The love you have for those you left will sparkle like the snow."

Dennis is survived by his wife, Diane; and their two sons, Peter (Sarah) and their children, and Mark (Peicha) and their children; nieces and nephews (children of Jim and Lois); and many wonderful friends. Dennis took great joy in being a grandpa. The grandchildren will have him with them in a special way as they pursue their own dreams.

In lieu of flowers of gifts, please be inclined to contribute to the Dennis Hansen Foundation through the Pipestone Performing Arts Center.  This will provide scholarships and funding in the arts for recipients in Pipestone.
