DICK EDWARD RICHTERS was born on August 17, 1938 to Diedrich “Dick” and Edna (Winter) Richters in Luverne, Minnesota. He was raised on the family farm just south of Luverne and attended country school through the eighth grade. Dick then went to work right away as a farmhand for a neighbor. When he turned age 17 and passed his commercial driver’s test, he went to work for Farmer’s Union Coop in Luverne. On September 9, 1961, Dick married Carol Overgaard at Zion Lutheran Church in Luverne. The couple lived in Luverne until February 1, 1963, when they moved to a farm six miles south of town. They would be blessed to live the next 55 years together on the acreage. Dick’s passion was farming; he first began working with his father and later with his boys. He often worked from the early morning hours until late in the evening. Throughout the years, he did custom field work, corn shelling and mixed his own feed. Dick formally retired in 2007, but somehow seemed to forget how to get out of the tractor as he couldn’t just sit still. Dick could often be found working as a handyman for his children, grandchildren and good friends on an array of projects. He especially enjoyed working as a handyman with his good friend, Roger Vogt.
On Monday, February 5, 2018 Dick died peacefully surrounded by his family while at the Sanford USD Medical Center in Sioux Falls, South Dakota at the age of 79 years, five months and 18 days.
Dick was a former member of Zion Lutheran Church. He was baptized and confirmed at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Rock Rapids, Iowa. He was a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Luverne. Dick enjoyed bowling in his early years. He also enjoyed square dancing, rarely missing a dance. Dick enjoyed putting together puzzles in his free time.
Dick is lovingly remembered by his wife, Carol; eight children, Rick (Lynn) of Luverne, Randy (Paulette) of Luverne, Ron of Worthington, Minnesota, Rodney (Laura) of Luverne, Sherry (Steve) Paulsen of Steen, Minnesota, Kari (Jim) Kueter of Hills, Minnesota, Ryan (Connie) of Hudson, South Dakota, and Susan (Tony) Lund of Canton, South Dakota; 25 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; two brothers, Larry (Bette) of Sauk Centre, Minnesota, and Roger (Charyl) of Outing, Minnesota; and other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents.
