Donald Bob Sandberg

September 8, 1941 — July 27, 2011

Donald (Bob) Robert Sandberg was born September 8, 1941 in Geneva, Nebraska to Donald & Eileen (Weatherly) Sandberg. He was united in marriage to his wife, Shirley Petersen, on October 22, 1960. They moved to Pipestone, Minnesota, where they raised their four children. They moved several times throughout their married life, settling in Lake Benton, Minnesota at the time of their retirement. Don joined the Marine Corp where he was stationed at Camp Pendleton, California, and was honorably discharged after four years. From there he joined the National Guard for two years. Don was very proud to have served his country.

Don owned his own construction business for many years and built many homes and other projects. He then had the opportunity to work for large construction management companies and was particularly proud of the opportunity to be part of the team that constructed an addition for Mayo in Rochester, Minnesota. He was also part of the team that constructed Roosevelt High School in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, the hospital in Pine Ridge, South Dakota, and helped finish a project in Denver, Colorado. There were numerous other projects he designed and built.

He was an active member of Lions in Sioux Falls, Pierre, and Lake Benton. He was also an active member of Gideons in Pierre and a member of the Lake Benton Chamber of Commerce. While living in Sioux Falls, Don had Bible studies with residents living in a half-way house. Don loved to fish, dance, play cards, and most importantly of all, he loved to study the Bible with friends. Don had a very strong faith in his Lord Jesus and would share his faith openly with others. His faith sustained him and his family and friends during his difficult battle with cancer. He often talked about how his family made him feel wealthy, and that his grandchildren and great-grandchildren were his “jewels.” Don peacefully went to be with the Lord on July 27, 2011 at the age of 69.

He is lovingly remembered by his wife of 50 years, Shirley; daughters Pam (Barry) Nosbusch; Virginia (Conrad) De Kam; and Jo (aka Teresa) Dimando; grandchildren Kirsten Hunt and special friend John Miller, Seth, Malory, and Sammi Nosbusch; Bridget, Martin, and Abby De Kam; Destiny (Lance) Ripka; Sierra Dimando; and three foster grandchildren; great-grandchildren Rheanna Worlds, Halle, Aidan, and Macgregor Hunt; Emry and Mya Nosbusch; Justyce and Braydon Ripka. He is also survived by his brother, David (Mavis) Sandberg, and many numerous nieces and nephews.

Don was preceded in death by his sister, Faith, parents Don & Eileen, and his son, Mark. Don was so looking forward to seeing his family that had already gone to be with the Lord. He was given instructions to give hugs to numerous family and friends’ loved ones that he will see in heaven. He will be greatly missed and will always be in our hearts.
