Donald Charles Long was born on July 31, 1924 to Charles and Clara (Dahms) Long in Pipestone, Minnesota where he was raised on the family farm and attended rural Pipestone District #12. Upon completion of his education, he helped farm. In October of 1944, he joined the United States Army. He served during WWII and spent time overseas. After his honorable discharge from the Army in 1946, he went back to the farm. Later, he moved to Portland, Oregon where he owned a trucking business. On March 21, 1968, he was united in marriage to Faye Lange in Reno, Nevada. In the early 1970s, they returned and Donald farmed until his retirement in 1991. The couple continued to live on the family farm while renting out the farm land to neighbors. Don and Faye moved to Ridgeview Estates in September of 2017. Due to declining health, Don became a resident of Good Samaritan Communities of Pipestone on December 1, 2017. He died there on Monday, October 15, 2018 at the age of 94 years, two months and 15 days.
Don was a member of Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church in Pipestone where he served as an elder. He participated in the Hiawatha Pageant for several years. He was an avid coin and gun collector and was a lifetime member of the NRA. He had an interest in aviation and was a private pilot. He liked hunting, fishing, bicycling and bird watching.
He is lovingly remembered by his wife, Faye Long of Pipestone; four step-children, Joan Stoltenberg of Circle Pines, Minnesota, Paul Henningsen of Volga, South Dakota, Brenda (Terry) Rave of Lead, South Dakota and Roger (Lynnette) Herrera of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; 16 grandchildren, Jodi (Tim) Nelson, Scott (Shelley) Stoltenberg, Paula (Darrin) Lindblom, Justin (Kristin) Henningsen, Brian Henningsen, Jeremy (Jessica) Blum, Jamisin (Mark) Bahle, Dustin (Amy) Rave, Naomi (Jim) Cuka, Blake Rave, Brett Rave, Gabby Rave, Savannah Rave, Amanda Herrera, Ashley Schumacher and Gatlin Herrera; 18 great-grandchildren; and two siblings, Carol King of Melbourn, Florida and Richard Long of Sioux Falls. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, James and Charles; one sister, Charlotte; and two infant siblings, Joseph and Doris.
