Donald Dorn

Donald Dorn was born August 1, 1918 to Virgil and Johanna Dorn at Hendricks, Minnesota. He was baptized and confirmed at Trinity Lutheran in Hendricks, Minnesota. He attended New Grove rural school and graduated from Hendricks High School in 1936. Donald and Valera (Derby) were united in marriage August 6, 1939 at Trinity Lutheran in Hendricks. Their union was blessed with three children, Lowell, Darwin, and Darla and 68 years of life together. The couple bought a farm in Drammen Township where they farmed for more than 30 years. Donald served as county commissioner from 1956 to 1980. They retired in 1973, and moved into Lake Benton where they had built a house. In retirement they enjoyed travelling and visiting with family. Valera died on January 25, 2008. Donald became a resident of Hendricks Nursing Home in 2007. He died there on Thursday, October 31, 2013 at the age of 95 years.

Donald was a long time member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Lake Benton. He served in the life of the congregation as Chairman of the Congregation for near 20 years. He enjoyed his life work of farming, fishing, softball, dartball and especially time spent with family and friends.

Donald will be lovingly remembered by his children, Lowell (and Betty) Dorn of Brookings, South Dakota, Darwin (and Ruthann) Dorn of West Bend, Wisconsin, and Darla (and Jim) Krause of Flat Rock, North Carolina; six grandchildren, Jeff (Michelle) Krause, Todd (and Kristin) Krause, Dana Dorn, Shannon (and Todd) Traeder, Lisa (and Todd) Grantham, and Tony (and Deb) Dorn; ten great-grandchildren, and many other family and friends. Donald was preceded in death by his wife, Valera; his parents, Virgil and Johanna; siblings, Irene Knutson and Glen Dorn.
