DONALD J. SHIELDS...
age 84, of Grand Rapids, MN, died Saturday, September 20, 2014 at Grand Itasca Hospital in Grand Rapids, MN.
Don was born in 1930 to Joseph and Anna Shields in Woodstock, MN where he also grew up and worked on the family farm. He joined the U.S. Army in 1949 and served 3 years during the Korean Conflict. Upon returning from the Army, Don worked for a short time as a lineman for REA. On August 19, 1952, he was joined in marriage to Margaret Mae Priester. Don began working for Hess Trucking in 1952 until 1962 when he went to work for Mobil Oil in Geneva, NE, where he retired from in 1990.
Don enjoyed fishing, hunting, golfing and making memories with his family and friends. He was a past member of the Knights of Columbus, The American Legion and St. Michaels Catholic Church in Sioux Falls, SD.
Don is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Margaret; daughter, Kathy (John) O’Dea of Hayward, CA; sons, Patrick (Wendy) Shields of Grafton, ND and Michael Shields of Sioux Falls, SD; two grandchildren, Amber Toay and Christopher (Ashli Barnick) Shields; two great-grandchildren, Jacob and Alex Toay; several nieces and nephews. Preceding him in death were his parents; two sisters; and one brother.
