Donald Edward Prosch was born December 30, 1918 to William and Mary (Grubich) Prosch on a farm in Drammen Township, northwest of Lake Benton, Minnesota. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Genevieve Catholic Church in Lake Benton. As a young boy, he moved with his parents to Verdi, Minnesota where he attended school. When he was 13 years old, he moved back to the farm and continued his education in Verdi. After his graduation as the class valedictorian from Verdi High School in 1936, he stayed on the farm and helped his father. On December 8, 1947, he was united in marriage to Leona Louise Kohler at St. Genevieve Catholic Church in Lake Benton. Their union was blessed with five children and 55 years of marriage together. The couple rented a farm and later purchased the farm northwest of Lake Benton where they raised their family. Don enjoyed his life work of farming, especially feeding and caring for his cattle. Leona preceded Don in death in 2003. Don continued to live on the farm until 2008 when he moved to the Lake Benton Valley Manor. He later became a resident of Hendricks Assisted Living and recently in December of 2014 had entered the Hendricks Nursing Home. Donald died there surrounded by his family on Monday, August 3, 2015 at the age of 96 years.
Donald was a member of St. Genevieve Catholic Church in Lake Benton. He was very interested in public affairs and served as a clerk on the school board of the country school in District #53. He was also the supervisor for Drammen Township for 24 years. He was a director of the Lake Benton Farmers Coop Elevator for over 20 years, a longtime director of Hope Mutual Fire Insurance, and a Lincoln County Commissioner for 12 years. He enjoyed caring for his livestock, dancing, playing cards, and reading.
Donald is lovingly remembered by his children: David (and Barb) Prosch of Lake Benton, Minnesota, Deanna (and Gerry) Hoffmann of Pipestone, Minnesota, Arnold (and Marcella) Prosch of Dubuque, Iowa, Audrey (and Dave) Schlimmer of Lake City, Florida, and LaDon (and Julienne) Prosch of Lake Benton, Minnesota; 24 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; four sisters, Bernice Murray of Salt Lake City, Utah, Grace Anderson of Walnut Grove, Minnesota, LaVonne Bressler of Santa Monica, California, and Gladys (and Bruce) Southward of St. Paul, Minnesota; and many other relatives and friends. Don is preceded in death by his wife Leona his parents; brothers, Harold and Wayne Prosch; and sisters, Marjorie Gunderson, Dorothy Prosch, and Evelyn Rudebusch. Blessed be his memory.
