Donald Vanderostyne

July 15, 1932 — February 9, 2014

Donald VanDerostyne was born on July 15, 1932 in Lyon County, Minnesota to Edmond and Emma (VanWatermeulen) VanDerostyne. He grew up on a farm near St. Leo and then moved to Porter. He was baptized in 1932 at St. Edward Catholic Church in Minneota and confirmed in 1943. He attended District 58 country school and graduated in 1947. He joined the United States Army on May 21, 1953 and was discharged on March 3, 1955, having been stationed in Germany and Austria during the Korean War.

When he returned from the service, he cut meat at the Porter Locker. On June 3, 1961 Don married Emily Ratajczak at St. John Cantius Catholic Church in Wilno, Minnesota. The couple moved to Tyler, Minnesota and were blessed with three sons and a daughter. They later divorced. He worked at the Tyler Locker until 1983, and in Marshall, Minnesota until 1987, when he went to work at a meat cutting plant in Canby, Minnesota until 1989. He met Brenda Swagner and moved to Ivanhoe, Minnesota. He worked at Lincoln Hills Farm by Lake Benton until he retired at the age of 62. Due to health reasons, Don moved to the Minnesota Veterans Home in Luverne, Minnesota in 2005, where he lived until his death on Sunday, February 9, 2014 at the age of 81.

Don was a member of St. Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Ivanhoe. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, going to the casino in Flandreau, taking trips in the summertime, and spending time with his friends and family. At the Veterans Home he rarely missed a game of bingo, and liked watching Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy. He especially enjoyed spending time with his two grandsons, John and Gary Sutherland.

Don is lovingly remembered by his children, Kevin VanDerostyne of Lake Preston, South Dakota, Brian VanDerostyne of Tyler, Minnesota, and Linda Sutherland and her husband Tom of Lake Benton, Minnesota; grandsons, John and Gary Sutherland; two sisters, Evelyn Anthony and Katherine Skorczewski, both of Canby, Minnesota; and many other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Dale; two sisters, Agnes Bicek and Genevieve Eischens; two brothers, Lawrence and Raymond; and a special friend, Brenda Swagner.

Blessed be his memory.
