Dorothy Hyde

DOROTHY ANN HYDE was born to Jacob and Gertrude (de Yong) Pouwe on January 12, 1929 in Primghar, Iowa. She attended school in Ashton, Iowa until 1940 when the family moved to a farm near Ruthton, Minnesota. Dorothy graduated from Ruthton High School in 1948, and then attended nurse’s training at St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester, Minnesota. While she was in training, she was diagnosed with tuberculosis and had to quit school. On July 25, 1949, she was united in marriage to Charles J. Hyde in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. After their marriage, they lived in various cities in Minnesota. They moved to Pipestone, Minnesota in 1958, where Dorothy worked as a waitress in several restaurants. Charles preceded her in death on December 5, 1966. Dorothy continued to reside in Pipestone after his death and in 1968, she became employed by the Pipestone County Welfare Department. Dorothy moved to Marshall, Minnesota in 1979 where she worked for Region 8 North Welfare. She retired in 1990 and returned to Pipestone for the next 25 years. In September of 2015, she moved to Mankato, Minnesota. On Sunday, February 5, 2017, she was admitted to Mayo Clinic Health System in Mankato and died there on Monday, February 6, 2017 at the age of 88 years and 25 days.

Dorothy has been an active member of the advisory committee with the Split Rock Creek State Park, a delegate to the Minnesota Senior Federation, a member of the Historical Society, President of the Pipestone Senior Citizens, and a member of the Southwest Singles. In 2001, she earned the title of Outstanding Senior Citizen of Pipestone County. Dorothy thoroughly enjoyed traveling. In 1977, she met her aunts, uncles and cousins for the first time in the Netherlands, the birthplace of her parents. This was a great experience since she grew up not having an extended family. Since that time she visited over 25 countries on 6 different continents. She often spoke of this as being the greatest education ever.

She is lovingly remembered by her five children, Dawn Hyde (significant other, Dave Faleide) of Vadnais Heights, Minnesota, Duane Hyde of Pipestone, Minnesota, Doris (Terry) Bruns of Pipestone, Minnesota, Dale Hyde of Pipestone, Minnesota, and Debra (Richard) Kunst of Mankato, Minnesota; ten grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband; one daughter, Diane Mundahl; her parents; three sisters, Martha Nielsen, Henrietta Cutkay and Frances Pronk; and her special friend, Leo Schueller.
