DR. ALBERT CHARLES MARTIN was born on June 9, 1920 to Russell and Frances [Tobias] Martin in Harvey, Illinois. He graduated from high school in Harvey and went on to attend the University of Illinois in Champaign, Illinois. Following his undergraduate degree, he pursued medical school, where he graduated from the University of Illinois College of Medicine in 1944. Upon completion of his internship at the Illinois Central Hospital, he entered the U.S. Navy, where he served as a Medical Officer on an aircraft carrier. He was discharged on August 9, 1946. He was united in marriage to Dorothy Brown on March 2, 1945 at Grace Episcopal Church in Chicago, Illinois. Following their marriage, the couple resided in Harvey, where Albert started work as a General Practice Physician. In 1950, they moved to Luverne, Minnesota, where Albert established his own practice. After 21 years, he accepted a position as an Emergency Care Physician with the NW Permanente Clinic in Portland, Oregon. Dr. Martin was named “Distinguished Physician” by the NW Kaiser Permanente Clinic in 1979 and later retired in 1987. They resided in Lake Oswego, Oregon until 1997. Dorothy died in 1997 and Albert moved to Portland’s West Hills and later, in 2005, to an independent living retirement center in Wilsonville, Oregon. On Saturday, August 9, 2014 Albert died peacefully in his home surrounded by his family at the age of 94 years and two months.
Albert was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Luverne and the St. Francis Episcopal Church in Wilsonville. He served as an Elder for the First Presbyterian Church. He was involved in the Luverne Commandery No. 22 Knights Templar, the Living Arch Chapter No. 28, was a 25 year member of the Luverne Rotary and Sons of the American Revolution. He was also a 50 year member of the Ben Franklin Masonic Lodge No. 114. Albert enjoyed growing orchids and could often be found in his rose gardens. He was an avid reader, writer and life-long learner. Albert was devoted to his family.
He is survived by his three daughters, Cammy Iverson and her husband, Richard of Minneapolis, Minnesota, Jo Anne West and her husband, Ronald of Eugene, Oregon, and Peggy Martin-Waters and her husband, Patrick of Seattle, Washington; six grandchildren: Rachel Iverson (Ben Mulcahy), Anne (Stephan) Dunning, Kate (Rich) Rader, Samuel (Hilleri) West, Michael (Meredith) Anderson, and Alex Anderson; eleven great-grandchildren: Quinlan, Dorothea, and Tobias Mulcahy, Evelyn and Noel Dunning, Ella and Jillian Rader, Ailie and Phoebe West, Clementine Anderson, Baby Girl Anderson, due to be born this month. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Dorothy.
