Duane E. Schlapkohl

February 1, 1951 — August 15, 2013

Duane Earl Schlapkohl was born in Pipestone, Minnesota on February 1, 1951 to Vernon and Eunice (Brockberg) Schlapkohl of Trosky, Minnesota. He was baptized on March 14, 1951, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Trosky. His sponsors were Ivan Brockberg and Vida Mae (Brockberg) Johnson. The family moved to a farm site south of Lake Benton on Highway 75 where Duane spent the first nine years of his life. He was admitted to the Faribault State Hospital on June 1, 1960 until December of 1968 when he was transferred to the St. Peter Minnesota Valley Social Adaptation Center. On March 31, 1967, Duane was transferred to the Willmar Regional Treatment Center, and on December 27, 1978, he became a resident of REM in Tyler, Minnesota. He attended the Hope DAC in Ruthton until 1991, when it closed and he transferred to Hope DAC in Tyler. On Thursday, August 15, 2013, Duane passed away due to complications from pneumonia at Tyler Healthcare Center at the age of 62.

Duane enjoyed many activities including going out for ice cream, car rides, watching the Minnesota Vikings, and looking through JCPenney catalogs. He also enjoyed watching western movies, I Love Lucy, and Lassie.

Duane is lovingly remembered by his siblings, Delbert Schlapkohl of Crookston, MN; Darwin (Diane) Schlapkohl of Canby, MN; Carolyn (Robert) Willert of Brookings, SD, Daryl (Caryl) Schlapkohl of Lake Benton, MN, and Daniel Schlapkohl of Bozeman, MT; his nieces and nephews, Brian Schlapkohl of Hendrum, MN, Jason (Serena) Schlapkohl of Canby, MN; Dawn (Jeremy) Paulsrud of Hillsboro, ND; Jennifer (Aaron) Husby of Marshall, MN; Travis (Tiffany) Willert of Sioux Falls, SD, Andrea (Eric) Becker of Shakopee, MN, Michael (Shannon) Schlapkohl of Sioux Falls, SD, Elsie Ann Schlapkohl of Pipestone, MN, and Jonathan Schlapkohl of Lake Benton, MN; and by many friends and 'family' that he has had through the years at both REM Tyler and Hope DAC. He was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents, and step-mother.

Blessed be his memory.
