EDWINA CARROLL RUST was born July 13, 1929 to John and Anna (Gibboney) Doyle on a farm southeast of Luverne, Minnesota. She was raised on various farms throughout Rock County and received her education in Luverne, graduating high school in 1948. She lived at home upon completion of her education. On May 20, 1949 Edwina was united in marriage to LeRoy Rust in Luverne. The couple began their life together living in a trailer on LeRoy’s parents’ farm near Adrian, Minnesota. While LeRoy farmed, Edwina worked hard as a homemaker. They were blessed with five children, David, Rebecca, James, Laura and John. Edwina was proud of each of their children and tried her best to pass along her confidence, integrity and unconditional love to each of the children. Edwina took great pride in raising her children and doing her part on the farm. Edwina and LeRoy eventually moved into the main house. They lived and operated the farm until 1997, when their youngest son took over the home place and farming operation. At this time, Edwina and LeRoy moved into town. On Wednesday, December 23, 2015 Edwina died peacefully under hospice care at Sanford Medical Center in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
Edwina was a member of First Baptist Church in Luverne, where she taught Sunday School and enjoyed Bible studies for many years. She was a voracious reader and loved word searches and puzzle books. She took great pleasure in the simple things in life. Often times, she and LeRoy would get in the car and ride around to count deer or other animals. She enjoyed taking in nature’s beauty, especially the colors during autumn. Her children will remember being served a wonderful hot breakfast every morning during their childhood and the countless homemade goodies that were made in her kitchen. She will be remembered most for her simple faith that ran deep in truth throughout her life.
Edwina is lovingly remembered by her husband of 66 years, LeRoy; five children, David (Mary) of West St. Paul, Minnesota, Rebecca (Steve) Lee of Sioux Falls, James (Gail) of Magnolia, Minnesota, Laura (James) Slade of Sioux Falls, and John (Karen) of Adrian, Minnesota; 15 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great grandchild; two sisters, Kay Cox of Adrian, and Laura May Bosch of Brandon, South Dakota; brother-in-law, Ron Ehrisman of Sioux Falls; and other family and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Anna; two sisters, Margaret Lynch and Alice Ehrisman; brother, Paul Doyle; two half-sisters, Florence Gengler and Lucille Bainbridge; and three brothers-in-law.
