Eileen Mildred Jewett was born February 1, 1917 to Edwin and Minnie (Munson) Lee on a farm in Moody County near Flandreau, South Dakota. She grew up in Flandreau and attended country school at Fletcher School, District #28. She graduated from Flandreau High School in 1935. Following her education she worked various jobs as a nanny and in Gutterman’s Mercantile in Flandreau. Eileen married Francis Jewett on December 12, 1936 in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Their union was blessed with four children and 59 years of life together. The couple made their home in Flandreau and began farming in 1944. In 1956 the family moved to a farm south of Ruthton, Minnesota. Eileen worked at Red Owl in Ruthton from 1963-1974. They retired in 1989 and moved to Pipestone, Minnesota. Francis preceded her in death on August 16, 1996. Eileen continued to live at her home. On Thursday, March 24, 2011 Eileen entered Pipestone County Medical Center where she died at the age of 94 years, 1 month, and 23 days.
Eileen was a member of United Methodist Church in Pipestone. She was a member of Calumet Chapter #51, Order of Eastern Star in Pipestone. She enjoyed gardening, was an avid reader, and loved cooking and sharing her talents with everyone. She liked to play cards, particularly pinochle, and especially enjoyed time with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
Eileen is lovingly remembered by her children, William (and Barbara) Jewett of Alexandria, Minnesota, Steven (and Marla) Jewett of Sloan, Iowa, and Linda (and Tom) Barron of Ruthton, Minnesota; 13 grandchildren: Dawn (Mark) Faerber, Sarah (Mike) Petersen, Megan (Colin) Miller, Tyson (Angela) Jewett, Dr. Travis (Dr. Sarah) Jewett, Becci (Abe) Erickson, Melissa Talley, TJ (Jennifer) Barron, Daniel (LaZia) Barron, Robert (Jillian) Barron, Andrew (Alicia) Barron, Bethany Barron, and Grant Barron; 18 great-grandchildren: Alexander, Jackson, and Sydney Faerber, Tripp and Carly Petersen, Katie and Natalie Miller, Bryce, Ian, and Layla Jewett, Magnus Erickson, Joshua Talley, Asher and Micah Barron, Jaden, Jocelyn, and JaZiah Barron, and Grayson Barron; a brother, Marvin Lee of St. Paul, Minnesota; and many other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Francis; infant daughter Kathleen; her parents; and six brothers and one sister.
