ELIZABETH “BETTY” ROSE ANN JOHNSON was born on May 19, 1935, to Harold and Thelma (Itse) Rauk in Spring Grove, MN. During her early years, Betty lived in Spring Grove and Rochester, MN before moving to Pipestone, MN in sixth grade. Betty graduated from Pipestone High School in 1953 and married Roger Goodwin Johnson on February 6, 1954. Roger and Betty were blessed with five children: Daniel, Debra, Steven, Julie, and Michael. Other than one year living in Sioux Falls, SD, they spent all of their married life in Pipestone, mainly on the Johnson family farm. Betty worked as a sales clerk at several local businesses in Pipestone, but found her passion helping children as a paraprofessional at Pipestone Public Schools. She also helped Roger on the farm.
Betty passed away on Thursday, February 3, 2022, at the Pipestone County Hospice House at the age of 86. Betty was an active member of First Lutheran Church in Pipestone where she was involved in choir, the Silvertones quartet, Joy Circle, and many other activities. She volunteered at the local food bank, delivered Meals on Wheels, and was a voting judge. Betty enjoyed singing, attending family sporting events, doing crossword puzzles, and playing cards. She was the family link, the first on the dance floor (especially for the Chicken Dance), and was a champion maker of lefse and potato salad. Most importantly, Betty enjoyed spending time with her family and friends.
Betty is lovingly remembered by her children, Daniel (Jan) Johnson of Bloomington, MN, Debra (G.L.) Tucker of Detroit Lakes, MN, Steven (Chris) Johnson of St. Cloud, WI, and Julie (Tira) Johnson of Luverne, MN; grandchildren: Kristen Lee, Megan Fox, Lauren Kendall, Haley Zipperer, and Lucas Johnson; five great-grandchildren: Evelyn and Emerson Lee, Anika and Avery Fox, and Jean Kendall; sisters: Cathy (John) Steinhauer and Mary (Bob) Ott; sisters-in-law: Jean Kimes and Andrea (Merlynn) Bean, and brother-in-law Gregg (Nancy) Johnson, along with many cousins, nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Roger, her parents, son, Michael, and several in-laws.
Betty's family would like to give a special thanks to all the staff at Falls Landing, Good Samaritan Communities of Pipestone, Pipestone County Medical Center, and the Pipestone County Hospice House for their wonderful care. Memorials in her memory may be made to the First Lutheran Church in Pipestone and the Pipestone County Hospice House.
