Emily Nielsen

November 24, 1942 — May 2, 2015

Emily Nielsen was born on November 24, 1942 to John and Magdaline (Gawarecki) Ratajczak in Royal Township, near Ivanhoe, Minnesota. She was baptized, received first communion, and was confirmed at St. John Cantius Catholic Church in Wilno, Minnesota. She attended parochial school at Wilno and later attended school at Ivanhoe. She was united in marriage to Victor Nielsen on June 14, 1987 at New Life Rest Chapel at Arco, Minnesota. The couple made their home in Tyler, Minnesota. Emily worked for the Brick Manor in Arco, RTR High School, Danebod Folk School, and volunteering with the elderly. On Saturday, May 2, 2015 Emily was airlifted to Avera Heart Hospital in Sioux Falls, South Dakota where she died at the age of 72.

Emily was a member of St. Dionysius Catholic Church in Tyler. She enjoyed working with flowers, motorcycle touring, and fishing. She especially enjoyed her life on the farm, farm work, milking cows by hand, and picking wild berries.

Emily is lovingly remembered by her husband, Victor Nielsen of Tyler; sons, Kevin VanDerostyne of Lake Preston, South Dakota, and Brian VanDerostyne of Tyler, Minnesota; daughter, Linda (and Tom) Sutherland of Lake Benton, Minnesota; step-daughter, Victoria Nielsen of Portland, Oregon; grandchildren, John and Gary Sutherland of Lake Benton, Minnesota; siblings, Deloris (and Chester) Citterman of Mundelein, Illinois, JoAnn (and Jerry) Leitz of Ivanhoe, Minnesota, Rose Ann Popowski of South Barrington, Illinois, Joseph Ratajczak of Ivanhoe, Minnesota, Emil Ratajczak of Ivanhoe, Minnesota, Helen Sik of Benson, Minnesota, and Harry (and Marlene) Ratajczak of Ivanhoe, Minnesota; and many nieces, nephews, and other family and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Dale VanDerostyne; brothers, Frank and Stanley Ratajczak; brothers-in-law, Paul Popowski and Jerome Sik; and step-daughter, Christina Nielsen.
