Eugene Curtis Westerbur was born on May 24, 1944 to John Carl and Ethel Iona (Reimers) Westerbur in Pipestone, Minnesota. He was raised in Ihlen, Minnesota and attended grade school there. He graduated from Pipestone High School in 1962. He entered the United States Army and went to Korea and was honorably discharged on June 9, 1967. On October 10, 1970 he was united in marriage to Barbara Stevens at the Chandler Lutheran Church in Chandler, Minnesota. Gene worked in various jobs before working for the Burlington Northern Sante Fe Railroad. In 1991, after 22 years with the railroad he retired. After his retirement the family continued to live at home in Jasper. On September 7, 2018, Gene entered into the Good Samaritan Society – Mary Jane Brown Home in Luverne where he passed away on Wednesday, September 19, 2018 at the age of 74 years, three months, and 26 days.
Gene was a member of Jasper Evangelical Lutheran Church in Jasper, Minnesota. Through the years he enjoyed fishing, hunting, and watching the Minnesota Twins.
Gene is lovingly remembered by his wife of 47 years, Barb of Jasper; two children, Mike (Beth) Westerbur of Luverne, Minnesota; and Kim (Aaron) Lape of Jasper, Minnesota; and three grandchildren, Dylan Westerbur, Kendra Westerbur, and Shelby Lape. He was preceded in death by his parents; his parents-in-law, Harry and Tillie Stevens; and his brother, John Westerbur, Jr.
