EVAN VERSTEEG, age 71, of Luverne, Minnesota, passed away on May 18, 2016 with his loving family at his side. He fought a courageous battle with COPD and cancer. Evan’s positive attitude, determination and faith set the precedence of his acceptance of these diseases to his family and friends.
Evan was born on April 5, 1945 in Sioux County, Iowa to Vernon and Johanna (Wegter) VerSteeg. He grew up on farms in the Newkirk, Iowa and Edgerton and Kenneth areas in Minnesota. Evan attended Kenneth Elementary School and graduated from Luverne High School in 1963. Upon graduation, Evan served his country with the Luverne National Guard Unit. He was a faithful member of the American Reformed Church in Luverne. Evan was a farmer throughout his life and also employed at Terrace Park Dairy, Iowa Beef Packers and Farm Pro.
Evan’s passion was spending time with his family. He also enjoyed gardening, fishing, quarter horses, rodeos, collecting Red Wing Pottery, Transport for Christ, and more recently, the great coffee times with friends, neighbors and family. Evan loved vacationing in Northern Minnesota with family and also cherished relationships developed with Lao friends.
Evan is survived by Twila, his loving wife and best friend of over 50 years; two sons, Tim (Na) VerSteeg of Brandon, South Dakota and Tom (Alison) VerSteeg of Luverne; a daughter, Tami (Brian) Bergman of Luverne; grandchildren, Cade and Lauren VerSteeg, Ross and Will Bergman, and Ty VerSteeg; and a sister, Veralyn (Don) Klosterman of Wilsonville, Oregon. Evan was preceded in death by his parents; twin brother, Elden Merle VerSteeg; and his in-laws, Elmer and Frances Drost.
