EVELYN LEONA IVELAND was born to Charles and Anna (Kuper) Loger on April 14, 1922 on a farm in Kanaranzi Township, near Ellsworth, Minnesota. She attended country school through the eighth grade and then stayed home and helped out on the farm. The family later moved to Ash Creek, Minnesota and then settled in Luverne, Minnesota. In Luverne, she worked as a waitress and then took a job at AR Woods. She married Boyd Iveland on March 3, 1946 at the Stateline Church near Ellsworth. The couple lived on a farm east of Luverne and then made their home on a farm near Kenneth, Minnesota. Along with being a full-time homemaker, Evelyn waitressed at the VFW. In December of 1964, they moved into Luverne where she began babysitting. Following Boyd's death on October 7, 1972, Evelyn continued to reside in their home. In 1997, she moved to the Centennial Apartments in Luverne. On Sunday, April 13, 2014 Evelyn died peacefully at the Sanford Luverne Medical Center at the age of 91 years, 11 months and 29 days.
Evelyn was a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Luverne. She was also a member of the VFW Auxiliary. During her years at the VFW, she and Boyd loved to spend time on the dance floor, especially when a Dean Martin song was playing. In her younger years, she loved traveling and eventually collected a plate from all of the 50 states. She embroidered pillow cases, dish towels, table cloths and runners and was well-known for her peanut butter bars. Evelyn loved playing cards and was very sharp and extremely competitive during her games of pinochle. She was an avid reader of biographies. She also collected half dollar coins, loved clothes and shoes, and enjoyed a good crossword puzzle.
Evelyn is survived by her children, Cheryl Heikes and her husband Bernard of Luverne, Bryce Iveland and his wife Sue of Little Falls, MN, Maxine DePauw and her husband Burdette of Gurnee, IL, and Dawn Petersen and her husband Daniel of Luverne; 12 grandchildren, Kari (Jim) Easterly, Krista (Michael) Sweeney, Ethan (Rebecca) Petersen, Jordan (Emily) Petersen, Canaan (Kelli) Petersen, Kelsey Petersen, Tobie (Anna) DePauw, Coral (Chris) Shaffer, Jon (Michelle) Iveland, Erin (Kevin) Duenwald, Megan Byerly and Emily (Andy) Berg; 15 great-grandchildren, Abby and Kate Easterly, Josiah, Henry, Caden, Nolan, Everett, Teddy and Quincy Petersen, Lily, Mason and Sage DePauw, Hazel Shaffer, Embry Duenwald, and Paige Berg; a sister, Doris Kemerling of Luverne; her brother, Donald Loger of Luverne; and other family. She was preceded in death by her husband, Boyd; infant son, Gary; daughter, Valere; parents, Charles and Anna Loger; sister, Marion Gertz; and brother, Edwin Loger.
