Geneva Powell

Geneva Marlene Powell. . .

was born to Emil G. and Hannah (Willert) Lamp on July 28, 1924 in Ward, South Dakota where she was raised in the Ward and Elkton, South Dakota areas. She was confirmed at Peace Evangelical and Reformed Church in Elkton. She attended Flandreau High School in Flandreau, South Dakota, graduating in 1942. Following her education, she worked as a beautician in Flandreau and Elkton for several years. On September 22, 1946, she was united in marriage to Arthur Powell at Peace Evangelical Church in Elkton. Following their marriage, they farmed in the Pipestone, Minnesota area for 43 years. In March, 1988, Arthur became ill and they moved into Pipestone. On October 5, 1989, he preceded her in death. After his death, she continued to reside in Pipestone. Geneva worked for 22 years at the Good Samaritan Communities of Pipestone and after her retirement, she enjoyed doing volunteer work there. On March 23, 2010, she moved to Riverview Health Center in Flandreau, South Dakota where she died on Sunday, March 24, 2013 at the age of 88 years, seven months and 26 days.

Geneva was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Pipestone. She was also a member of several clubs. She enjoyed her many beautiful crafts and flowers. She was a beautiful seamstress and enjoyed making her children’s school clothes. She was a leader of 4-H, teaching the members how to sew for many years. She loved baking and will be remembered by her family for her homemade bread and her ginger cookies. She was a dedicated wife and mother, raising her six children.

She is lovingly remembered by her children, Janelle and her husband Larry Steffen of Colman, South Dakota; Sharolyn Paige of Pipestone, Minnesota, Steven and his wife Wanda Powell of Pipestone, Minnesota, Nancy Powell of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Rick and his wife Tamara Powell of Brandon, South Dakota, and Jodee and her husband Mark Griebel of Pipestone, Minnesota; four grandsons, Jared and Kade Powell, Cody (Arin) Powell, and Conner Griebel. She was preceded in death by her husband; one granddaughter, Karey Powell; and her parents.
