GENEVA ELLEN SCHELHAAS was born on July 6, 1943 to Albert and Ellen (Halbersma) Hubers at Pipestone County Hospital in Pipestone, Minnesota. She lived with her family by Pipestone where she graduated from High School in 1961. On November 30, 1963 Geneva was united in marriage to Nelvin Schelhaas at the American Reformed Church in Woodstock, Minnesota. The couple made their home in Pipestone. Throughout the years Geneva had various bookkeeping jobs, sometimes working two jobs at a time. She enjoyed her work which included positions with Nissen Oil, Eastside Mobil, Pipestone County Farm Bureau (for 19 years), KA Feeds, and United Building Center (for 17 years). Her most recent bookkeeping job was at Timber Roots where she retired from in February of 2009.
Geneva was most recently a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Luverne. She was always dedicated to her church life and through the years she served as the church treasurer for the First Presbyterian Church in Pipestone and the United Methodist Church in Hawarden, Iowa.
Geneva was diagnosed with renal cell cancer in February of 2010. In February 2011 she was diagnosed with bone cancer. She put up a valiant fight at the Good Samaritan Center in Sioux Falls, South Dakota where on May 17, 2012, Geneva went to be at peace with her Lord and Savior.
Geneva is survived by her loving husband, Nelvin of Luverne, MN; her children, Duane Schelhaas of Pipestone and his daughter, Shania, and Kay Thomas (special friend, Rick) of Sioux Falls and her sons, Darrick and Zachary; her father, Al Hubers of Pipestone; 10 siblings, Jolene Hubers of Pittsford, NY, Ruth (Jim) Smith of Mason City, IA, Thelma (Bill) Boyle of Port Charlotte, FL, Albert Gary (Karen) Hubers of St. Cloud, MN, Myron (Beth) Hubers of Hoschton, GA, Glenn (Pat) Hubers of Pipestone, Will (Keri) Hubers of Baltic, SD, Pam (Mike) Pingeon of Marshall, MN, Karen (John) Hoekstra of Lynd, MN, and Sandie (Bill) Mack of Langdon, ND; four siblings-in-law, Jacob (Gladys) Schelhaas of Jasper, MN, Caroline DeGrote of Russell, MN, Laura Posthuma of Lawton, IA, and Gary Posthuma of Lake Wilson, MN; and many nieces, nephews, family and friends. She was preceded in death by her mother, Ellen; an infant brother, Randall Lee; sister-in-law, Janice Posthuma; and brother-in-law, Henry DeGrote.
