GORDON "GORDY" MELVIN AAS was born to Gordon and Margaret (Amundson) Aas on June 5, 1945 on a farm in Christiana Township of Jackson County, Minnesota. He was raised on several farms by Windom, Minnesota where he attended country school through the sixth grade. He then went to Windom High School. After his graduation in 1963, he helped on the farm. In 1969, he enrolled in the telecommunications program at the Vocational Technical Institute in Jackson, Minnesota. On April 4, 1970, he was united in marriage to Edith Berg in Windom. Following their marriage, they lived in Windom where he continued attending school, graduating in July, 1970. Upon completion of his education, he began working for Continental Telephone Company in Tyler, Minnesota. Then in September, 1971, they moved to Jasper, Minnesota where Gordy continued his career with Continental Telephone. Throughout the years, the company changed hands and is now known as Frontier Communications. In 2009, after 38 years of service, Gordy retired from his telecommunications position. Gordy fought several types of cancer for the last 14 months, and on Sunday, March 14, 2021 he died peacefully at the Pipestone County Hospice at the age of 75 years, nine months, and nine days.
Gordy was a member of the Jasper Evangelical Lutheran Church and the Jasper Lions. He served on the City Council and volunteered as a fireman from 1983 to 1998.
He is lovingly remembered by his wife, Edie Aas of Jasper, Minnesota; two children, Lisa and her husband Doug Petersen of Jasper, Minnesota and Jared Aas of Owatonna, Minnesota; two grandchildren, Kerri (fiancé, Chris Wick) Petersen of Adrian, Minnesota and Bryce (Jessica) Petersen of Jasper, Minnesota; two great-grandsons, James Wussow and Sawyer Wick; one sister, Audrey Knollenberg of Alexandria, Minnesota; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Horace “Sonny” Hanson and Allen Hanson; and his brother-in-law, Allen Knollenberg.
Memorials are preferred to the Jasper Lions Club.
