HAROLD 'BUD' MARVIN FREY was born to Jerry and Hattie (Groen) Frey on September 18, 1929 on a farm in Lyon County, Iowa. He was raised on a farm near Magnolia, Minnesota until 1932 when the family moved to a farm in Nobles County, Minnesota and Harold began his education at District 79 country school. In 1946, he moved with his parents to Adrian, Minnesota. Upon completion of his education, Bud worked on various farms until 1948 when he became employed at the Adrian Block Factory and later as a trucker for Hatting Gravel. On June 4, 1951, he married Shirley Enninga at the First Presbyterian Church in Luverne, Minnesota. Following their marriage, they lived in Luverne and Bud continued to work at Hatting Gravel until April, 1952 when he was drafted into the U.S. Army and served in Germany. After his discharge from the service in March, 1954, he returned to Adrian, where they raised their five children and he again worked at Hatting Gravel. In 1958, he became employed at Klooster Trucking where he drove truck long distances. In 1964, he started working on the maintenance crew at Iowa Beef Processors. While working there, he and his wife moved near Luverne. On February 20, 1992, he retired from IBP. Bud remained active doing various part-time work. In 2012, the couple moved into town. In July, 2015, he became a resident at the Minnesota Veterans Home in Luverne. On Sunday, May 28, 2017 Bud died peacefully at the Sanford USD Medical Center in Sioux Falls, South Dakota at the age of 87 years, 8 months and 10 days.
Bud was a member of the VFW. In his spare time, he enjoyed hunting and spending time with the family horses.
He is lovingly remembered by his wife, Shirley Frey of Luverne; his five children, Kenneth Frey of Brandon, South Dakota, Barbara Compton of Woodland Park, Colorado, Larry Frey and his wife Carrie of Luverne, Robert Frey of Luverne, and Sandra Akkerman and her husband Brad of Luverne; 14 grandchildren, Jesse (Brenda) Frey, Becky (Paul) Huiskes, Andy Frey, Thomas (Linda) Frey, Chad Compton, Les Compton, Trish Alger, Shawna (Jason) Brandt, Peggy (Kevin) Boyles, Matt (Kayla) Carlson, Amanda McTigue, Traci Carlson, Heather Frey, and Presley Akkerman; 30 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Aleida Mae VonHoltum of Luverne. He was preceded in death by his parents; two grandsons, Eric James Compton and Joshua Allen Frey; and a baby brother.
