Harriet Madsen Bornhoft Buhl

March 1, 1924 — July 9, 2016

HARRIET MADSEN BORNHOFT BUHL, loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother, aunt, and friend, was born on March 1, 1924 to George and Agnes (Madsen) Bornhoft in Tyler, Minnesota. She attended school in Tyler, graduating from Tyler High School in 1942. She helped the World War II effort by working in California as “Rosie the Riveter.” Returning to Tyler, she worked at K & K Mercantile. On July 14, 1946 she was married to Ingvor Ostergaard Buhl at Danebod Lutheran Church. They farmed south of Tyler. In 1965, the couple purchased Buhl’s Supermarket (the Corner Store) and operated it until 1973. At that time she began cooking at Danebod Village and then managed there until her 80th birthday. Harriet was an active member of the Danebod Ladies Aid and WELCA groups. In later years she enjoyed being part of the Tyler Senior Center.

Harriet enjoyed cooking and baking. Her coffee pot was always on and she loved keeping her cookie jars filled! She was “hooked on crocheting” – a favorite pastime her entire life. Flower and vegetable gardening, canning, and playing board and card games gave her many hours of fun. Her enjoyment of all of these was passed on to several generations. Most of all, Harriet loved being with her family; her life revolved around them.

On July 9, 2016, Harriet passed away at the age of 92 years, four months, and eight days.

Harriet is lovingly remembered by her three children, Joan (Jerry) Jagt of Tyler, Bonnie Schnell of Alexandria, Minnesota, and Alan (Susan) Buhl of Thief River Falls, Minnesota; six grandchildren, Jackie (Trent) Hess, Jeryn (Walter) SiaSu, Jana Cottrell, Justin (Anne) Buhl, Jennifer (Adrian) Belmontez, and Tyler (Courtney) Buhl; 11 great-grandchildren, Chloe, Rylie and Tatum Hess, Allie, Kian, and Claire SiaSu, Ethan and Caroline Cottrell, Rory Buhl, Gwenyth Steele, and Gilbert Belmontez.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ingvor, in 1986; her parents, George and Agnes; and two brothers, Myron and Melvin Bornhoft.

Blessed be her memory!
