Irma Theresa Pottebaum Dreckman was born March 28, 1923 to John and Susan (Mousel) Pottebaum. She grew up in Alton, Iowa and completed her education at St. Mary's Academy. On February 5, 1945, she and Adrian Henry Dreckman were married at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Alton. They farmed near Struble, Iowa until 1952 when they bought a farm southeast of Ruthton, Minnesota. After Adrian's death on March 28, 1975, Irma continued to stay on the farm and did volunteer work until she began as custodian at Ruthton Public School. She worked there for five years before she started working at Hope Day Activity Center for disabled adults. Irma also did substitute cooking at the Ruthton Senior Mealsite. In 1986, she moved to Pipestone, Minnesota. Irma worked as a cook for the Pipestone Senior Dining Site until she started working for Progress, Inc. In 1996, she moved to Luverne, Minnesota and resided at the Centennial Apartments. On May 17, 2011, Irma became a resident of Good Samaritan Communities of Pipestone, where on Sunday, July 2, 2017 she died peacefully at the age of 94 years, three months and six days.
Irma was a past member of St. Martin Catholic Church in Woodstock, Minnesota, St. Leo Catholic Church in Pipestone and currently a member of St. Catherine Catholic Church in Luverne. While on the farm, Irma was always remembered for her huge garden and a lot of canning and baking. She was always good at having something baked fresh for us when we came home from school before we went out to do chores. One of her favorites was homemade buns with 'mustard' and cinnamon rolls. She was active in the 4-H Club as a leader and received a pin for 25 years of service. Irma enjoyed helping with the county fair projects getting them ready and working at the Murray County Fair. She enjoyed crocheting and sewing many quilts. While at Good Sam you could always find Irma working on her puzzles, reading books and coloring pictures to mail to her grandchildren. Most of all, she enjoyed seeing her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and friends.
Irma and Adrian had eight children, Mary Lynn (Lyle) Portz of Pipestone, Minnesota, Joyce (Lauren) Meyer of Lucan, Minnesota, Shirley (Loren) Fick of Luverne, Minnesota, John (Bonita) Dreckman of Balaton, Minnesota, Stanley (Donna) Dreckman of West Fargo, North Dakota, Bonnie Dreckman of Post Falls, Idaho, Roger (Lisa) Dreckman of Post Falls, Idaho and Richard Dreckman (special friend, Arlene Hinsch) of Luverne, Minnesota. She had 18 grandchildren and 32 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by one sister-in-law, Maxine Pottebaum along with many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; brothers, John Jr. (Virginia), Cecil (Joyce), Fred (Florence), Bernard (Esther) and Richard Pottebaum; sisters, Mildred (Lou) DeLatuer, Marcene (Bernard) Cole, Armella (Gerald) Homan, and Carol Jean (Daniel) Pick; and great-granddaughter, Parker Dreckman.
In lieu of sending out thank you's we wish to use this note to thank you for your prayers, food and memorials which are deeply appreciated. Sincerely - The Irma Dreckman Family.
