JANICE ALEEN SANDBULTE was born October 12, 1929 in Sioux Center, Iowa to Gerrit and Hattie (Te Grotenhuis) Den Herder. She grew up in town and graduated from Sioux Center High School in 1947. She met James Sandbulte at a square skipping party at the local roller rink and on February 24, 1950 they were united in marriage at the First Reformed Church in Sioux Center. The couple began farming near Maurice, Iowa. Later on the couple moved to a farmstead six miles south of Luverne where they put down their roots, raised their eight children and worked hard to make a good life together. Jim preceded Janice in death in June 1993. She continued to reside at their country home until moving to the Good Samaritan Society - Mary Jane Brown Home in Luverne in July of 2018, where on Sunday, March 10, 2019 Janice died peacefully at the age of 89 years, 4 months and 28 days.
Janice was a member of the American Reformed Church in Luverne where she was involved in circle, small group Bible study and served on various committees. She loved God and worshiping Him. She was a member of the Clinton Township Extension Club. You could often find Janice working in her flower and vegetable gardens. She loved to tend to her gardens and exhibited her flowers and vegetables at the county fair. She enjoyed playing cards, especially a game of Rook with anybody that would take her up on it. She liked to take her walks to the bridge and back on the nearby country road. Most of all, Janice loved her family. Throughout the years, she loved being able to attend her children and grandchildren’s sporting events and other activities and cheer them on. One of her greatest gifts to her family was showing them the importance of making time for one another. Every year, for the past 31 years, the Sandbulte family gathers at Lake Shetek with children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Each meal is preceded by a family prayer and before leaving on Friday, everyone sings “God Be with You Till We Meet Again”. Janice’s kindness, generosity and dedication to God and her family will forever be remembered.
Janice is lovingly remembered by her children; Dave (Nyla) Sandbulte of Luverne, Janet “Sue” (Rob) Rogers of Elgin, TX, Donn (Sue) Sandbulte of Luverne, Ned (Shelley) Sandbulte of Luverne, Gerrit Sandbulte of Beaver Creek, Norman (Tammy) Sandbulte of Bakersfield, CA, Paul (Ling) Sandbulte of Sioux Falls, SD and Machelle (Jay) Hershey of Pflugersville, TX; 28 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; and other family. She was preceded in death by her husband James; grandchildren, Chad Lee, James Lawrence, Tina Kate and Stuart Allen; brothers, Elmer, John Gordon and Kenneth Den Herder; and her sisters, Alyda DeVries and Jeanne Den Herder.
