JEANETTE VOS was born on October 18, 1924 to Henry and Hattie (Westra) Vander Streek on a farm in Lyon County, Iowa, south of Steen, Minnesota. As a child, her family lived near Steen, Lynden, Washington and Ocheyedan, Iowa. One of her favorite memories from childhood was when she and her family took a trip to the Netherlands in 1935 to see her grandmother. They traveled by boat and were gone for six weeks. Jeanette attended school through the seventh grade. When she was 17 years old, her mother died as a result of cancer and Jeanette became the “mother” to her younger siblings. On January 17, 1950, Jeanette was united in marriage to Dick Vos at the Reformed Church of Steen. Following their marriage, the couple farmed near Kenneth, Hardwick and Luverne, Minnesota. Jeanette was a homemaker and lovingly cared for their family. In 1973, she and Dick purchased a house in town and moved into Luverne. Jeanette kept busy with cleaning houses, wallpapering and painting for others. In 1997, the couple moved to the Centennial Apartments. Dick became a resident of the Minnesota Veterans Home in 2003, where he died on January 7, 2007. Jeanette became a resident of the Edgebrook Care Center in Edgerton, Minnesota on December 28, 2006 until Saturday, May 23, 2020 when she died and went to join her family in Heaven at the age of 95 years, seven months and five days.
Jeanette was a faithful member of the Luverne Christian Reformed Church. She volunteered for the Luverne Senior Center and played in the kitchen band. She enjoyed crocheting, word search puzzles, playing board games with friends, bowling and traveling. She also enjoyed playing piano and accordion. Jeanette taught her family how to be content in all situations and to always count their blessings!
Jeanette will be lovingly remembered by her four children, Ken (Phyllis) Vos of Luverne, Darlene (Dale) Dreessen of Luverne, Donna (Verlyn) Smidt of Sibley, Iowa and Eunice (Keith) Valenziano of Vero Beach, Florida; five grandchildren, Kyle (Amber) Vos, Kristi (Bruce) Van Dyken, David (Lynae) Dreessen, Debbie (Jared) Spronk and Dawn (Mike) Kohle; three step-grandchildren, Nick (Teri) Valenziano, Daniel (Stephanie) Valenziano and Katie (Kellen) Williams; 15 great-grandchildren, Wyatt, Sadie and Jonathon Vos, Maysa, Mia and Finn Dreessen, Arie, Levi, Case and Anne Van Dyken, Jake, Lexi and Bo Spronk, and Dominic and Avery Kohle; six step-great-grandchildren, Andi, Charlie and Marty Valenziano, and Julie, Mia and Gabrielle Williams; a sister, Alberta DeKam of Lynden, Washington; sister-in-law, Alice Krosschell of Edgerton, Minnesota; and other family.
