JENNIE NIEUWBOER was born on July 2, 1922 to Sabo and Tillie (Broesder) Veld. She was born on the family farm and grew up in the Chandler and Edgerton, Minnesota area where she attended country school. She was united in marriage to Henry Nieuwboer on June 10, 1944 in Fort Polk, Louisiana while Henry was serving in the military and before he was deployed to Europe during WWII. When Henry returned they lived most of their married life in Kenneth, Minnesota. In the early years of marriage, she worked for the Gardner Grocery Store candling eggs. But for the most part, she was a stay-at-home mom, baking weekly and helping Henry with the trucking business and raising their two children, Delbert and Gloria.
Jennie was a member of the Hardwick American Legion Auxiliary and the Magnolia High School Mothers Club, always active in the children’s activities and events.
In 1996, Henry and Jennie moved into an apartment in Luverne. Henry passed away on June 11, 2003 and shortly after that she moved to the Centennial Apartments where she enjoyed their activities there and doing lots of volunteer work, cutting squares at the Senior Citizens Center, serving coffee at the Veterans Home, helping with Bingo at the Mary Jane Brown Home and playing Bingo at the Luverne American Legion.
In February of 2013, Jennie became a resident of the Minnesota Veterans Home in Luverne where she loved participating in all of the activities provided there – Bingo and Rumikub were her favorites. This past fall season, she enjoyed peeling apples and helping make the pies. The residents and staff there became like family to her. On Saturday, December 3, 2016 Jennie died peacefully with family by her side at the age of 94 years five months and one day.
Jennie was a member of several churches during her lifetime and was currently a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Luverne, where she had enjoyed being a part of her circle, the “Hardwick Circle”, where she found many lifetime friends. She also attended church faithfully on Tuesdays and Sundays at the Veterans Home with the residents and Pastor Tom Voight. Her biggest joy of all was her family and enjoying all the visits, family gatherings, reunions, school activities, birthday parties, and capturing pictures at all of them.
Jennie was preceded in death by her husband, Henry; parents, Sabo and Tillie; and seven sisters, infant Henrietta, Florence, Tina, Bertha, Henrietta, Hilda and Tillie; and three brothers, Jake, John and Tony.
