JOAN CAROL GOEBEL was born on July 7, 1958 to Warner and Mary Jane (Ruppert) Walther in Slayton, Minnesota. She grew up as 1 of 12 siblings on a farm near Avoca, Minnesota. In 1969, her family moved to Worthington, Minnesota. She graduated from Worthington High School in 1976 and then furthered her education by attending Jackson Vocational and Technical School for accounting in Jackson, Minnesota. On September 17, 1977, she was united in marriage to Randy Goebel in Worthington. They made their home in Luverne, Minnesota where Joan was a stay-at-home mom for several years. In 1992, they moved to an acreage outside of Magnolia, Minnesota. In 2001, Joan began working at Luverne Public Schools as a substitute paraprofessional. Although some days were exhausting, she had a passion and a soft spot for the kids she worked with. On August 22, 2020, Joan died at the Sanford USD Medical Center in Sioux Falls, South Dakota at the age of 62 years, 1 month, and 16 days.
Joan was a member of the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses in Luverne. She was baptized in 1980 in Marshall, Minnesota. She spent time in the field ministry with other congregation members. She loved life and enjoyed many things: camping and traveling; doing puzzles, crosswords, playing scrabble, cards and games on the computer, and beating Randy in gin and cribbage; baking and cooking; gardening, flowers, and mowing grass; dancing at every wedding or gathering; and her oldies music. Joan spent numerous enjoyable hours working in her flower and vegetable gardens. Each year she would can salsa, tomato soup, jams, and pickled beets. Joan was a courageous person, easy-going and easy to get along with, and always willing to help in any way she could.
Joan will lovingly be remembered by her husband, Randy Goebel of Magnolia; children, Anthony (Lisa) Goebel of Meckling, South Dakota, Chelsea (Todd) VanBelle of Beaver Creek, Minnesota, and Carrie (fiancé Tyler Aning) Goebel of Huron, South Dakota; mother, Mary Walther of Rochester, Minnesota; grandchildren, Logan, Ava, Riley, and Kasyn; siblings, Stephen (Steve) (Elaine) Walther of Coon Rapids, Minnesota, Mary (Mark) Rubis of Lynn Haven, Florida, Francis (Frank) (Bonnie Klabel) Walther of Chaska, Minnesota, Diane (Leslie (Les)) Bucher of Eyota, Minnesota, Sally (Gary) Staggers of Broomfield, Colorado, Richard Walther of Bloomington, Minnesota, Deborah (Andrew (Andy)) Broughton of Battle Lake, Minnesota, Julie (Brian) Archuleta of Gallop, New Mexico, John Walther of Stockton, Illinois, and Jane (Terry Riemersma) Walther of Hammond, Minnesota; and mother-in-law, Rosanne Goebel of Worthington. She was preceded in death by her father, Warner Walther; sister, Susan Walton; and father-in-law, Firmin Goebel.
