JOYCE MARIE KADLEC was born to Henry James and Grace Dorothy (Frye) Carroll on August 13, 1942 in DeSmet, South Dakota where she was raised and attended school. After her graduation from DeSmet High School, she attended Northern State College in Aberdeen, South Dakota to obtain her teaching degree. After she received her degree in 1962, she began working as a third grade instructor in Wilmot, South Dakota. On August 18, 1964, she was united in marriage to Benjamin F. Kadlec at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church in DeSmet, South Dakota. Following their marriage, Joyce continued to teach in Wilmot. In 1965, she and Ben moved to Pipestone, Minnesota. In 1981, she became employed as part of the Resource Room Staff at Minnesota West Technical College in Pipestone. She continued working in this capacity until her retirement on September 11, 2001. She continued to be active in the community until she passed away at her home on Thursday, September 3, 2015 at the age of 73 years and 20 days.
Joyce was a member of St. Leo Catholic Church in Pipestone. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Thomas Catholic Church in DeSmet. She was an active member of the Catholic Daughters of the America’s and served as a lector and communion distributor at church. She was also a member of the Democratic Farmer Labor Party organization in Pipestone County. She was an advocate of Women’s rights and for all that needed support. She was very proud of her Irish Heritage. She enjoyed going to auction sales, and she was an avid reader.
She is lovingly remembered by her four sons, Mark Kadlec and his wife Stephanie of Sartell, Minnesota, Brian Kadlec and his wife Marlene of Eagan, Minnesota, Dale Kadlec and his wife Kelly of Fargo, North Dakota, and Gary Kadlec and his wife Marisa of Rochester, Minnesota; ten grandchildren, one brother, Tom Carroll and his wife Barbara of Monett, Missouri; and two sisters, Pat Tyrrell of DeSmet, South Dakota, and Mary Traphagen and her husband Doug of Aberdeen, South Dakota. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ben; her parents; and two brothers, Dean and Philip.
