Judith Lorraine Janssen of rural Trent, South Dakota passed away peacefully at home on March 15, 2023. Judy was born on April 20,1944 to Lawrence and Julia (Sutherland) Thies in Pipestone, Minnesota. She was the first of five children to be born in a hospital. Judy grew up in rural southeast South Dakota and graduated from Egan High School. She met Lyle Janssen while working for an insurance company in Luverne, Minnesota and they eventually married while he was on leave from the army before going to Vietnam. They settled in Sioux Falls, South Dakota and eventually moved to Brandon where they raised their two daughters, Michelle and Ranae. When her mother passed away, she moved back to the family farm to help take care of her father and started working for State Farm Insurance as an agent. Due to health issues she retired early and spent most of her time outside or with her quilting friends at church.
Judy was a member of Messiah Lutheran Church in Trent, South Dakota where she was a part of a quilting group that met monthly. She enjoyed getting together with her group of girls and sharing parts of her life while they quilted. Judy enjoyed not only sewing, but gardening, and doing genealogy. If you knew Judy, you knew that she had a lot of spunk and could be very comedic. Her daughter Michelle and grandkids attribute their spunk and sassiness to her. They will miss that the most about her.
Judy is survived by her daughter, Michelle of Alliance Township; her two grandchildren, Cody of Alliance Township, and Kallie of Sioux Falls; her brother, Jim (Dell) Thies of Pipestone, and Mark (Diane) Thies of Sioux Falls; along with one daughter, Ranae Janssen of Sioux Falls, SD, and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Mary; and two brothers, Bill and John.
In accordance with Judy's wishes, no funeral service will be held.
