Knute Harry Lund was born May 17, 1925 to Valdemar and Anne (Johansen) Lund in Denmark. He was baptized in Denmark and later confirmed in the Lutheran church. When he was 11 months, his family moved to the United States. The family established their home in southwest Minnesota and lived in the Arco and Lake Benton communities. He was a member of 4-H, showed dairy cattle and liked going to the Minnesota State Fair. He attended school through the 11th grade when he quit to work on the farm. Knute was a Golden Gloves Boxer. On August 28, 1955 Knute married Delores Draper at Danebod Lutheran Church in Tyler, Minnesota. Their union was blessed with two children and 53 years of life together. The couple lived on a farm north of Lake Benton for two years and then moved to Arco for one year before purchasing in 1959 a farm south of Lake Benton in Lake Benton Township where they established their home and raised their family. Prior to moving to the farm in Lake Benton to begin farming, Knute was a gravel truck driver. Knute also served as the Lincoln County Agriculture Inspector from 1987-2001. In his retirement years, Knute enjoyed his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, going to the Lincoln County Fair, and going to the Flandreau casino with friends. Delores died May 14, 2009 and Knute dearly missed the love of his life. He continued to live on the farm. Following a brief illness, Knute died on Tuesday, September 8, 2015 at the age of 90.
Knute was a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Lake Benton. He enjoyed his life work of farming, as well as Golden Glove Boxing, fishing, playing cards, and following the Minnesota Vikings and the Twins. He also enjoyed nature shows and going to The Showboat. He loved spending time with his family and friends.
Knute is lovingly remembered by his children, Linda (Jim) Berkenpas of Verdi, Minnesota, and Jeff Lund of Lake Benton, Minnesota; two grandchildren, Barry (Tanya) Berkenpas of Verdi, Minnesota, and Brandon (Nellie) Berkenpas of Jasper, Minnesota; six great-grandchildren, Becca, Breelee, Barrett, Julia, Aiden, and Allison; a sister, Astrid Clarson of Omaha, Nebraska; and many other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his wife Delores; his parents; sisters, Mariana Lawrence and Dagmar Brandt; brothers Jens and Johannes Lund; and other step-siblings in Denmark.
Blessed be his memory.
