Laura Hewitt

LAURA HEWITT was born to John Henry and Maggie (Freese) Janssen on December 15, 1918 on the family farm near Milford, Iowa. When she was two years old, she moved with her family to a farm near Woodstock, Minnesota where she was raised and attended country school. On March 8, 1939, she was united in marriage to Alvin Hewitt in Watertown, South Dakota. Following their marriage, they farmed in Rock Township near Woodstock until 1952 when they moved to a farm in Altona Township near Ward, South Dakota. In 1961, she became employed at the Okeh Laundry in Pipestone, Minnesota where she worked for ten years. She then became employed at Marshall Produce in Pipestone for two years. In 1973, she started working at the Pipestone Country Medical Center in the housekeeping department. Alvin preceded her in death on June 27, 1984. After his death, she moved into Pipestone. In 1992, she retired after 18+ years at the Pipestone County Medical Center. In July, 2006, she moved to a Senior Housing Unit in Mendota Heights, Minnesota. In October 7, 2009, Laura became a resident of Inver Grove Good Samaritan Nursing Home in Inver Grove Heights, Minnesota where she died on Saturday, November 12, 2011 at the age of 92 years, ten months and 27 days.

Laura attended the First Presbyterian Church in Pipestone. She was a member of the Pipestone County Senior Citizens Group. She enjoyed reading and did a lot of crafts until her eyesight failed her.

She is lovingly remembered by her ten children, Marilyn and her husband Vince Lance of Rogers, Minnesota, Charlene Hewitt of Inver Grove Heights, Minnesota, Karen and her husband Elmer “Junior” Ehde of Luverne, Minnesota, Linda and her husband Harry Barnes of Independence, Missouri, Sheri and her husband James Ross of Cottage Grove, Minnesota, Joyce Wilson of Minneapolis, Minnesota, Ihla Klingbile and her special friend, Ernie Voigt of Newport, Minnesota, Alan and his wife Linda Hewitt of Kasota, Minnesota, Terry and his wife Leslie Hewitt of New Effington, South Dakota, and Jeff and his wife Glenda Hewitt of Apple Valley, Minnesota; 16 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; five brothers, Ray, Harold, Merle, Wilbur, and Maynard; one sister, Alma Petersen; and one son-in-law, Donald Wilson.

Memorials may be directed to the Pipestone County Food Shelf or the First Presbyterian Church in Pipestone.
