LAVAR LORRAINE MOON was born July 29, 1924, to Lewis and Carrie (Nordmeyer) Freeman, in Lake Benton, MN. Lavar was raised in Lake Benton and attended Lake Benton Public School. In the late 30's, she moved with her mother and sisters to the Nordmeyer family farm across the lake and helped farm the lake bottom.
Lavar met Milton Moon, from Tyler, MN, at a dance in Elkton, SD, and married on June 25, 1944. They lived in Tyler a few years before they moved to Lake Benton, where they bought a house and resided for the next forty-some years.
Lavar began working for Ernie Gieneart at the Fairway Store and worked there for many years. She also worked various jobs in Lake Benton and retired as the City Librarian, a position she loved with all the interaction with the children.
Lavar was a lifelong member of St John's Lutheran Church where she was active in the Dorcas Society, holding numerous offices, and teaching Sunday School and volunteering where needed. She belonged to the American Cancer Society, serving as secretary. She enjoyed playing cards, reading, crafts, and having daily coffee with the neighbors. She was very proud of her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren and loved hearing about their lives and watching them grow.
Lavar moved to the Danebod Village, then to Tyler Sunrise Manor after a fall and had resided there since. She passed away on Monday, May 16, 2022, at the age of 97 years, nine months, and 18 days. Lavar is survived by her four children, Curtis of Ft Smith, AR, Eugene (Diann Koster) of Burnsville, MN, Colleen (Marlin) Wangsness of Sioux Falls, SD, and Mona (Lloyd) Schrader of Sioux Falls, SD; eight grandchildren, Jennifer (Andrew) Armstrong, Jeremy Moon, Chad (Jeanna Oberg) Moon, Eric (Joan Stasiak) Wangsness, Ryan (Laura Crosby) Wangsness, Michael (Heather Jackson) Wangsness, Staci (Brent) Eliason, and Kari (Chad) Hultgren; and 19 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Milton in 1987; granddaughter, Christie Moon in 2000; daughter-in-law, Carol Moon in 2021; her parents; brother, Raymond Freeman; and sisters, Isabel Hanson and Elva Schnell.
Blessed be her memory.
