Lorraine Schroer

September 30, 1929 — June 1, 2017

Lorraine Elvina (Nelson) Schroer was born on September 30, 1929 to Charlie Davidson and Hazel Valentine Rogers in Rapid City, South Dakota. When Lorraine was two years old her mother passed away and Lorraine and her two brothers were then placed in the Sioux Falls Children’s Home. She was adopted shortly thereafter by Edward and Ida Nelson and grew up on a farm in Centerville, South Dakota. When she was 19 years old she worked as a CNA at Sioux Valley Hospital and then McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls. Lorraine was first married to John Norling and the family lived in Beresford and Sioux Falls, South Dakota. To this marriage four children were born: Raymond, Terry, Shelly, and Diane. After her divorce, Lorraine married Herman Schroer and they are the parents of: Herman and Mary Schroer. Herman and Lorraine lived in Wilmont, Minnesota. After Herman’s death in 1977, Lorraine moved to Pipestone. After moving to Pipestone she met Jerry Leitheiser and the two were partners together for 40 years until his death in 2016. While living in Pipestone she worked at the Good Samaritan Communities of Pipestone for 12 years, retiring in 1989. Lorraine continued to live in Pipestone until she came to live at Edgebrook Care Center in Edgerton on August 23, 2012. She passed away peacefully there on Thursday, June 1, 2017 at the age of 87 years, eight months, and one day.
Lorraine was a member of St. Leo Catholic Church in Pipestone. Her favorite hymn to sing and hear was Jesus Loves Me, which is why it was chosen for her funeral service. Lorraine loved sewing, gardening (both flowers and vegetable), canning, and riding in the truck with Jerry. She also loved going to the lake and spending time there with her family.
Lorraine is lovingly remembered by her children, Terry (Jody) Norling of New Holstein, Wisconsin, Shelly (Chris) Hoffman of Sioux Falls, Diana (Dan) Graf of Sioux Falls, and Herman Schroer and Mary Schroer, both of Pipestone; 12 grandchildren, Ray, Jr., Amy, Jami, Matt, Mark, Jason, Jerad, Jessica, Jordan, Weston, Madorie and Byron; seven great-grandchildren, Veronica, Tyler, Liz, Zachary, Spencer, Jaylah, and Jazlyn; three siblings, Anna May (Ron) Oswald of Viborg, South Dakota, Mildred (Howard) Peterson and Norman (Anna) Nelson, both of Centerville, South Dakota. She was preceded in death by her parents, Edward and Ida Nelson; husbands, John Norling and Herman Schroer; life partner, Jerry Leitheiser; Son and Daughter-in-law Raymond (Toni) Norling; one infant son, Mark Schroer; and one sister, Colleen Van Litzenberg.
