LUCIEN “LU” MABEL STOUT was born to Theodore and Mabel (Anderson) Smallfield on October 28, 1922 in rural Hatfield, Minnesota where she was raised and attended elementary school in Hatfield, walking to school every day. For high school, Lu attended Pipestone High School, graduating in 1940. Three years after graduation, Lu married William “Bob” Stout on July 25, 1943 at the Methodist Church in Pipestone. Following their marriage, Bob enlisted in the United States Army Air Corps, serving during WWII. Lu tended to the family farm. Upon his return, the couple lived on her family farm, with Lu raising chickens, cooking for the hired hands, growing a large garden, and canning the extra produce. In 1954, Bob and Lu opened the Chanticleer Bar in Hatfield and owned it for ten years. During this time, they also continued to run the family farm in Gray Township and raised their three children. In 2007, the family farm was named a Century Farm. Bob and Lu moved to Falls Landing in July of 2008. Bob passed away on November 14, 2008. After his death, Lu continued to live in Falls Landing. In September, 2015, she moved to Riverview Healthcare in Flandreau, South Dakota, due to her declining health. As her health continued to fail, Lu was moved to the Pipestone County Hospice House. She died there peacefully on Friday, March 8, 2019 at the age of 96 years, four months, and 11 days.
Lu enjoyed helping with 4-H in sewing and baking projects. Thanks to her talents in sewing, Lu made a great deal of her own clothing. She was also an excellent baker and was well known for her chocolate cake with homemade frosting. Lu enjoyed watching the Minnesota Twins. Bob and Lu wintered in Mesa, Arizona for 28 years, enjoying their second home on Camelot Golf Course. Above all else, Lu loved spending time with her family and friends.
She is survived by her two sons; Bill Stout of Bruno, Minnesota and Ted (Joan) Stout of Pipestone, Minnesota; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and many other loving friends and family members. Lu was preceded in death by her husband, Bob; her daughter, Lori; and her parents, Theodore and Mabel.
