LUCILLE VIOLA HAMANN was born to Mattheus and Louise Wenzel Weilandt on April 23, 1921 in Duel County near Toronto, South Dakota. She was baptized into her Christian faith on June 19, 1921. Her family farmed near Toronto and then moved to the Trosky, Minnesota and Hardwick, Minnesota area when Lucille was a young girl. She attended District 51 Country School through the eighth grade. Following school, she continued to help her family on the farm, worked for other families as a hired hand and candled eggs for Hakes in Luverne, Minnesota. On February 10, 1946 she was united in marriage to Marvin Hamann at St. John's Lutheran Church in Trosky. The couple made their first home on a farm northwest of Luverne. They lived on various farms throughout Rock County before settling west of Luverne. In the early years, Lucille worked alongside her husband helping him farm. In 1975, she took a job as a cook at the Mary Jane Brown Home in Luverne which she continued for the next 25 years. Throughout her life, Lucille was an avid gardener. She and Marvin had two acres of land dedicated to her vegetable gardening and she loved tending to the garden and bringing produce to others. The couple retired from farming in 1997, and moved into Luverne. Marvin preceded her in death on March 13, 2013. In April of 2013, she moved to the Tuff Memorial Home in Hills, Minnesota where she died peacefully on March 3, 2014 at the age of 92 years, 10 months and 10 days.
Lucille was a member of the St. John Lutheran Church in Luverne where she was active in the Miriam Circle. She was also a member of the Rock County Extension Club. She enjoyed going to card club, quilting, embroidery, reading romance novels, dancing and going for coffee with whomever, whenever and wherever they wanted to go. She loved her family and spending time with her grandchildren.
Lucille is lovingly remembered by her children, Marvis Mitchell and her husband Don of Luverne, and Lowell Hamann and his wife Paula of Sioux Falls, SD; five grandchildren, Jon (Amber) Mitchell, Jeffrey Mitchell, Mark (Julie) Hamann, Kevin (fianc, Brittany Beers) Hamann, and Tracy (fianc, Eric Saathoff) Hamann; two great-grandchildren, Samara Mitchell and Benjamin Hamann; and her sister-in-law, Elaine Hamann of Luverne. She was preceded in death by her husband of 67 years, Marvin; her parents; and her sister, Helen Morgan.
As Lucille often said when she left others, she has 'places to go, bales to tote, men to chase!' You will be missed, Lucille!
