LUCILLE (THOMPSON) FICK was born on June 30, 1925 to Henry and Wilhelmina (Swanson) Thompson on the family farm near Pukwana, South Dakota, Brule County. She received her baptism on August 13, 1926 and was confirmed in her faith on November 26, 1939, both at Pukwana Lutheran Church in Pukwana. She was raised on the farm and attended school in town. She graduated from Pukwana High School and then furthered her education in accounting at Nettleton Business School in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Following her completion of school, Lucille took an accounting position with Frank’s Frozen Foods in Sioux Falls. She worked in bookkeeping for a number of years and then met Raymond Fick. On November 14, 1954 Lucille and Ray were united in marriage at St. John Lutheran Church in Luverne. The couple made their home on a farm southwest of Luverne and was blessed with four children. While on the farm, Lucille helped in several capacities, including bookkeeping. She also kept two large gardens, which kept her busy canning, along with making most of the meals for her family. Having come from days of not having much, she was wonderful at making delicious meals even from leftovers. Her son, Gregory preceded her in death on September 5, 1961. Ray preceded her in death on March 13, 1980. Despite these experiences, Lucille held firm to her faith and found strength in the Lord. She and her family continued the farming operation until Lucille passed on her farm to her two sons, Arden and Morris. In 1984, Lucille built a home on a nearby farm and continued to help wherever she could on the farm until later retiring. In March 2010, Lucille moved to The Oaks senior living facility in Luverne. On Thursday, May 12, 2016 at the Sanford Luverne Hospital, Lucille went to be with her Lord at the age of 90 years, 10 months and 12 days.
She was a faithful church attendee at St. John Lutheran Church in Luverne, where she belonged to Women’s Society and Circle. She was wonderful at cooking, sewing, knitting and quilting. She enjoyed playing cards, especially pinochle.
Lucille is lovingly remembered by her three children, Arden Fick of Luverne, Morris (Beth) Fick of Luverne and Judy (Mike) Simundson of Sioux Falls; six grandsons, Justin Simundson, Jordan Simundson, Joshua Fick, Daniel Fick, Matthew Fick, Jacob Fick; a great-granddaughter, Madalyn Fick; two sisters, Lois Bode of Chamberlin, SD, Lorraine Mosemann of White Lake, SD; many nieces, nephews and other relatives. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ray; son, Gregory; parents, Henry and Wilhelmina; three brothers, Avery Thompson, Milden Thompson, and Normand Thompson.
