LUVERNA CHARLATTA LESLIE HILLIARD was born on January 4, 1911 to David and Hulda (Sandgren) Carlson on a farm east of Luverne, Minnesota. She was raised on the family farm and attended country school through the seventh grade. Following her education, she remained on the farm where she continued to help her family. On February 28, 1935 LuVerna was united in marriage to Elmer Leslie. They lived and farmed near Sherman, South Dakota until moving to Sioux Falls, South Dakota in 1964. At this time the couple became employed at McKennan Hospital in the laundry department. In 1974 they moved to Sarasota, Florida. Elmer passed away in 1978. On February 27, 1982 LuVerna was united in marriage to Kenneth Hilliard. Kenneth passed away in 1986. In 2003, LuVerna moved to San Antonio, Texas to live with a niece. In 2007 she moved to Sunrise Village in Jasper, Minnesota. In 2010 she became a resident at the Good Samaritan Society – Mary Jane Brown Home in Luverne where on Sunday, March 1, 2015 LuVerna passed away peacefully at the age of 104 years, one month and 28 days.
LuVerna was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church in Luverne. She enjoyed baking, dancing and listening to music.
LuVerna is lovingly remembered by her sister, Florence Connell of Kansas City, Missouri; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husbands, Elmer Leslie and Kenneth Hilliard; son, Gene, at birth in 1949; two sisters, Lorraine Overgaard and Mabel Bakke; and five brothers, Harvey, Lawrence, Harold, Howard, and Warren Carlson.
