was born to Basil and Elizabeth (Dhaemers) Koppernolle on March 19, 1923 at Jasper, Minnesota where she was raised and attended school. After her graduation from Jasper High School on June 1, 1941, she became employed at Sack’s Store in Jasper. On July 28, 1949, she was united in marriage to Blaine Smith at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Jasper. Following their marriage, they lived in Jasper. Mabel began working as a cashier at the Jasper State Bank on January 2, 1957. She worked there until her retirement on January 2, 1986. On March 17, 2008, Blaine preceded her in death. After his death, Mabel continued to reside in Jasper until April, 2008 when she became a resident of the Walker Methodist Home in Minneapolis, Minnesota. On Monday, May 2, 2011, she died there at the age of 88 years, one month and 13 days.
Mabel was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Jasper where she was active in the Altar Society and the Catholic Church Women. She was also a member of the Jasper American Legion Auxiliary and the Jasper Senior Citizens. She enjoyed playing all kinds of cards as much as she could (about 40 hours per week), and she belonged to several card clubs.
She is lovingly remembered by her daughter, Annette Lynch and her husband Tom of Minneapolis, Minnesota; three grandchildren, Molly, Mrs. Cameron Lynch-Cornell, Tim and Brian Lynch; two great granddaughters, Nora and Maud; one sister, Ruth Linnemeyer and her husband Donald of Sioux Falls, South Dakota. She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; and two brothers, John Koppernolle and Charles Koppernolle.
